So, yesterday we took DD to finish up her vaccinations for kindergarten (EEK! Can't believe she is that big already!) and she got the chicken pox vaccine. There is a chance that she will break out with chicken pox at the site, or somewhere else on her body. If she does, it IS contagious. Now, i've already had chicken pox so i know i should be fine. However, i tossed and turned last night about it!
I know what can happen if you are exposed while pregnant, and that the greatest risk is between 13 and 20 weeks and i had horrible dreams about my baby being disfigured and having seizures last night!
Sigh....I think i'm worried because i was really young (3 or 4) when i had them and when i went in to get titers drawn for school (didn't have immunization records) half of the things i was vaccinated for came up negative for immunity! I'm thinking of calling my Dr Monday and just asking if they will do a titer for it so i can have some peace of mind. Of course this may not be an issue at all as she only has a 25% chance of breaking out....
That's it I'm officially CRAZY!
In all seriousness though, should i ask for a titer? WWYD?

ohno that sucks. I am sorry to hear. I really hope she doesn't get a rash and that you aren't exposed. I remember having them at 6

I don't know what a titer is, but if it helps your peace of mind, ask for it. Regardless, I'd mention that she got the vaccine to your doctor since it's obliquely related to the pregnancy. Just so the doctor is aware. Maybe ask them what you should do, if anything. 25% is a lot to me. I view things in margins of error, though, when it comes to statistics like that. Otherwise, just keep an eye on DD until the danger time passes. If it'd been me, I probably would've had those dreams too, so don't feel weird about that. Apparently I missed the train for fuzzy baby animal dreams.

All my kids have been vaccinated for chicken pox and not a one of them has broken out. I hope that makes you feel better. If I didn't have two kids in the high risk category I might have chose to forgo that vaccine, but since I know that my boys with type 1 diabetes can get really, really sick if they get something like that I went ahead and vaccinated everybody. But anyhow, none of my kids have ever broken out from it.

lol, me too! A titer is where they draw blood to test for immunity. Since i couldn't find my immunization records for nursing school, they ran titers on everything (EXCEPT chicken pox!) to see if i had immunity. If i did, great, if not i had to get re-vaccinated. This is the reason i'm worried, EVERYTHING came back negative for immunity and they said its probably because it was so long ago that i got them...so i'm wondering if the same would be true for chicken pox?

I would probably have anxiety about it too. My DD will get her vaccinations for kindy this May when she is 4 (that's when our Dr's office does them now)........but I believe she already had the chicken pox vax when she was younger. I'll have to be aware of what they are givng her though.
I would say everything is probably fine but it wouldn't hurt to get tested to ease your mind.

If you get a titer done and it comes back negative for immunity, are you going to freak out more?

i got chicken pox THREE times and i was vaccinated. and they were all bad cases
i was 8, 11 ans 21 yes 21 years old. im not trying to make you worry i dont think you will have an outbreak because your child got vaccinated but it is possible to catch it more than once.

Thanks everyone, and yes i would freak out more if i'm not but it would be good to know so that they can monitor the baby more closely. The only way you can catch it from an immunization is if they break out in chicken pox. They said there is a 25% chance she can get some at the site of the injection or somewhere else on her body, if that happens she IS contagious. I know the majority of kids wont get any, but i also know a few who have.
My sister in laws kids all did. Well, one got the immunization and did, and then spread it to the rest of her kids
I guess i should just stop freaking out unless she gets them.

I would get the titer. If it comes back negative, and your daughter breaks out, then they can give you prophylactic antibodies to decrease chance of you coming down with chicken pox. I never had chicken pox, so I was titered this pregnancy and last one. Apparently my immunity is off the chart so you might be immune. Also, you might not even get it if you were exposed. I was exposed all the time as a kid, including my sister breathing and coughing all over me and my stuff, and I never got sick. lol...If you got vaccinated against chicken pox, the vax is usually good for 10 years (they used to say 20, but are now finding 10 is the standard) Immunity is a lot longer if you actually had chicken pox.

Yep I agree just for your peace of mind to get it done.. I have thought about the chicken pox thing lately as well as we have a family member (not living with us ) with it and I have never had chicken pox.. But I have actually been told I am probably immune to it.. Both our boys last year both had chicken pox and I never got it.. My brother and sister when I was younger got it.. My mother , as they did back then, let me run around with them with the hope I would catch it... nothing.. So I have been told I will prob never get it.. like I have a natural immunity to them or something..? weird...
Anyway I would for peace of mind get it done

Did you actually have the chicken pox or just get the immunization when you were young? If you had the chicken pox yourself, you should be fine.
If it will ease your mind, get tested.

I hope she doesn't break out. My DD got her Chx pox vax in Feb and she didn't have any sort of reaction. I'll cross my fingers for you.
