I just wanted to let mothers that are going to breastfeed that bottle mouth can happen with breast milk. I read that breast milk wasn't known for causing bottle mouth and the cause was giving a bottle of juice or cows milk especially at night was the culprit. Marley got teeth really early, at 4 months. I brushed his teeth twice a day, but I night nursed. I read the Doctors Sears baby book and it said that breastmilk isn't likely to cause bottle mouth. Well that wasn't true for us. It may be that he got teeth early and combined with the night nursing, he got tooth decay and had to have dental work done at one year. I was devastated and still feel guilty about it. He has his front four teeth and 2 molars done. The front teeth are silver with a ceramic face but they still look a bit gray. It is a shame that I will never get over. He won't have a normal smile until he looses his baby teeth and that is many years away still. I blame my Pediatrician a little bit because she knew he had teeth and when I asked when I should go to a dentist she said around one years old. Well a lot of books I have since read say you should bring them in when the first get teeth,,,who knows. I just know that with my second I am going to be extremely cautious!

I asked my dentist when I should take Ethan for his first dentist visit & she said 2! He got his teeth very early, too (as a matter of fact, he cutting his 2 year molars now...only 7 months early) so now I'm wondering if I should take him sooner. He has all the teeth of a 2 year old. Hmmmm

Oh man. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Both of my girls night nursed and got teeth at 4 months too and we haven't had any problems. Maybe yours is that rare case. What do you think they will suggest that you do differently this time since you were already brushing twice a day?

I don't know. I still plan to night nurse but I will be extra careful when she starts getting teeth. Without having done further research yet I plan to use a wet cloth to wipe her teeth at night after nursing. Nursing is so important to me and I know the benefits so I would never not nurse, even if she was at high risk I think. I will just be diligent about rinsing and not listen to my Pediatrician and see a dentist regularly once she gets her first tooth.
