I had my teeth cleaned back in February and my dentist told me their was a tooth that I probably should get an x-ray on, but he wanted me to be out of the first trimester. A couple weeks ago my tooth was throbbing really bad, but the next day it was much better. Either way I called figuring I did not want to put this off if my tooth was hurting that bad. I've needed root canals before and I know when your teeth start bothering you the pain can sneak up on you fast and can be extremely painful.

So today I go in and my dentist looks at the tooth and takes a quick x-ray. While he is waiting for it to develop he shows me the cavity and says it looks like it's a little cavity, but it shouldn't be bothering me that much. Tells me he can fill it and asks me if I want numbed up. I, of course, say yes and so he numbs up my tooth all the while waiting for my x-ray to develop. He then steps out to go look at the x-ray.

After my mouth is all good and numbed up he asks me "when you said your tooth was bothering you, would you say it was throbbing". At that point I'm thinking great and tell him yes, it was pretty bad. He then shows me the x-ray and tells me that it looks like a dental abscess and he needs to send me to an endodontist for a root canal. Wah, boo me. I swear every time I get pregnant I need a root canal! So this sucks. My mouth got all numbed up for nothing and now I still have to go back for a root canal. Thankfully the endodontist could get me in on Thursday. Now, I'm just hoping my tooth does not bother me between now and Thursday.

Anyone else had their teeth go bad on them during pregnancy?

Ugh, I'm so sorry you have to get a root canal. I've had a few of those myself.

So far so good with my teeth during pregnancy. I got them cleaned a few weeks ago and I'm going to get them cleaned again around 35 weeks. I know pregnancy can be extra hard on your teeth and gums.

I have heard of people having dental issues while pregnant. Are you drinking enough milk?

That stinks you had to get numbed up for nothing I would be so irritated!

I am so sorry. I have two more cavities that need to be filled (I've had two), but other than that everything is OK. Dental pain is the worst. I hope things heal up quickly for you!

Such a bummer. (So is the bill... )

That stinks! I have yet to get a cavity (knocks on wood). But I am sure I would want an epidural for my mouth if it were possible because I hear those suckers can hurt!

Oh Teresa, sorry about your tooth. It just won't stop won't it? There is always something. Really sorry you have to have a root canal. I had one and know the pain you are in right now.

I haven't gone to the dentist in 2 yrs cause last time she drilled around on my tooth so much it hurt for about a yr. I know I should go and one day I will make an appt. As always I am afraid of bad news so I have been putting it off.

Hey Teresa!!! I'm sorry, I know that pain...the Wednesday before I found out I was pg (found out on Sat), I had a repeat root canal with the endo. After though, that's when my tooth abscessed (so a little backwards from yours)...so I can totally understand!

Hope you get it done w/o any problems and get to feeling better soon!

Thanks girls. I'm just glad I am not in a lot of pain at the moment and hoping to get it fixed before it flairs up again.

And Sarah, good hearing from you. I was just thinking about you the other day wondering if you were still around.

I'm sorry you have to go through that, that stinks!

I actually had an abscess right around Christmas, it was awful. I have known that all four of my wisdom teeth have cavities and need to come out, but it is insanely expensive and I didn't have insurance until I got pg. Anyway, it started throbbing just like you said and it wouldn't go away. It became infected and I had to get antibiotics. I have not done anything about it yet but I am meeting with an oral surgeon soon who can figure out if its worth it to pull my teeth during pregnancy. It's a bummer too because other than that, my gums and other teeth are perfectly healthy. So I know how you feel! Feel better
