I hate picking names! So far I've looked at all the girl names in one book and I'm up to C in the second and I've only come up with six possibilities and I don't even like half of them, I just felt like I was being too picky! We know the middle name will be Marie. That's tradition in my family and it's something that I want to continue to continue. They don't have anything like that in DH's so he really doesn't care. The first name is killing me though. DH wants it to have a nice religious meaning which rules out most names. I love names like Autumn, but it's automatically out for him. I should've stuck to cleaning, now I have a headache.

These are what I've come up with so far...

  1. Aleah Marie
  2. Gabrielle (or Gabriella) Marie
  3. Imani Marie
  4. Janice Marie
  5. Odelia Marie
  6. Samantha Marie

I'm really favoring Samantha out of all of them, but that's what I'd always wished my name was growing up. Needless to say Anna is just a fraction of my name because my actual name is long, annoying, and a pain to spell.

The u/s is tomorrow, but I've already scrubbed my house so much it smells like a lemon tree blew up so I decided to dive into baby names. I figure DH wants a boy so much it'll probably be a girl and it'd be too cool if we did girl, boy, girl, boy so that's another reason it probably won't happen. I may look at boy names tomorrow while I wait for my appointment to roll around. Right now it's girl possibilities driving me up the wall.

I really like Samantha! In fact, it's what I probably would be naming this baby if my DH agreed. I've always loved the name. Aleah is cute, too!

My neighbor has a daughter named Alia, same pronunciation. I also like Imani, I think it goes well with Isis.

Thanks ladies. I won't leave until around 2:30 so I think I'll look at some boy names just in case, but DH likes Gabriel if it's a boy and Gabrielle if it's a girl at this point so we may have one either way. A baby boy just wouldn't have a middle name and all his clothes would be in NC.

I like Samantha Marie the best out of the names you have there.
What about Sierra Marie? Or Olivia Marie?

I love names like Sierra, but DH wants it to have a religious meaning so anything that doesn't is automatically ruled out with him. It's his only request on names so I don't want to tell him to take a hike on it, but he could've made an easier one. It rules out most names.

Yay for Aleah! That was #1 on our list for a girl, but DH's family felt it was "too common" of a name in their country. Poo We're now stuck for girl names and finally settled on a boy name (Muhammad "Rayhaan"). It seems your DH is more compromising on names than mine...we HAVE to have a full Muslim name, and it is soooo hard to get him to agree to at least let the middle name if it's a girl be Ann, which is a family name for me. Sheesh!!
PS I also love Imani!! If you go with Grabrielle I'm assuming it would be pronounced in the western version (as opposed to the Islamic pronounciation)?

I really like Samantha and Gabrielle. We are going with Samantha too if the baby's a girl. My step daughter's name is Alexis Marie, but I don't thing Alexis is a religious name.

DH has been fired for being Muslim and my oldest has had trouble at school so it's made him a lot more compromising on names. He wants the meaning to be there, but doesn't want it to be anything that the baby will be given trouble over. If we go with Gabrielle we'll teach both pronunciations so she'll know it both ways. I can't see others getting it right even if we correct them up one side and down the other. Then when she's older she could choose the pronunciation she wants to go with.

I can't believe he was fired for being Muslim!! That's horrible!! And that's awful about your oldest having trouble at school. I would have thought there was a larger Muslim population in DC? Is there no Islamic School your kids can attend instead? Thankfully, we haven't had any problems (except, obviously, right after 9/11) but I also think it could be that my DH looks Latino (people come up to him speaking in Spanish alllll the time!). I've wanted to practice wearing the hijaab, but I'm too scared to walk around in it. And, when DH prays in the car people walk by staring at him and pointing. I hate it! People here have no idea, Ugh.
I totally understand about the name issue. My family is Christian, and the idea of my children having Muslim names terrifies them. So I've been trying to find names that seem to work for both cultures. I like Rayhaan because people and family here can call him Ray (plus his family likes it because apparently it's "unique"). Girl names, I think, are alot easier because there are so many that are used here. Unfortunately, being Muslim in this country is soooo hard. I can't wait to see what you guys decide on! Good luck!!

We're not in DC, we're on the opposite end of Maryland. DH just has a job that has him working in MD, DC, VA, WV and occasionally PA. They won't allow the building of a Mosque in our area so local Muslims have to make due with an old community center and the nearest Islamic School is 4 hours away and having problems with the government. Our area is very low tolerance and acts like any Muslim must want to blow something up. His family is Catholic and mine is Methodist so that doesn't make things any easier.

Hopefully we can both come up with something. Picking names isn't fun!

Oh, wow so I assume you're both converts? I can't believe they're that way in Maryland. That's absolutely terrible! The small town I'm in had alot of trouble getting it's own mosque for awhile, too (although not from the gov't but from the local neighborhood nearby). They had to hold prayer in a small house instead. Finally they were allowed to build a large, gorgeous mosque and it's in construction now (Alhumdulillah). Although, the neighborhood has held fast that the azhan cannot be played over the loud speaker (oooooooo it's a call to come meet together to plan terrorist plots ooooo). How can your town not allow the mosque to be built? Isn't that against the law? And I'm still troubled by your DH being fired! Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in MD. I have some good friends in New Jersey and Toronto, but that doesn't help you any...
