Anyone know of any dietary changes that can prevent one or both of these? I never had either with my son, but I want to avoid them if possible.

hm, well to prevent GD, you should just watch your carb intake. Make sure you aren't eating too much bread/pasta products and of course, watch your desert intake. Skip the crackers and go for the apple type thing. I think it is pretty much the same for pre-e. I had a friend trying to prevent pre-e and she cut gluten out of her diet. No clue if that is what you are suppose to do or not. She is the paranoid, over dramatic type that has to make everything into a huge problem, so I am not sure it was really necessarily or helped anything.

I have had pre-e with both pregnancies and have tried to do lots and lots of reading.

There is the Brewers diet... which, I think studies are starting to show that this may not be the best route

Ina May Gaskin (a famous midwife in Tennessee) writes about eating a high protein vegetarian diet. This is sort of the route that I am taking. I am eating less meat, but high protein options, I am allergic to wheat and I have cut that out (I did not know this my last pregnancies), I get kidney stones easily from calcium build-up so I have to limit to no more than one glass of milk a day and cooking with milk only. I also had a LOT of weight gain in both of my last pregnancies... so I have to watch what type of calories I take in so that I do not cause extra work for my heart... so I do not drink juice or eat junk food. So I pretty much drink only water, eat wheat free, and a high protein vegetarian diet., And I try to stay as active as possible...but take breaks when needed. I allow one day a week for cheating, but once I start eating a certain diet, some things don't seem appealing to me. Except pastries and pizza.... those will always be a weakness for me, lol!

Pre-e can be helped by not eating much if any salt throughout your pregnancy too. Salt (sodium) is found in a lot of things you don't think about. Like for instance, colas. So read the labels of the things you are eating a lot of.

Que, my foster son is on a glueten free diet (and therefore so is my family). I have a great recipe for bread that is glueten free and you can use it to make pastries and pizza dough too if you are interested!
