Techs can't check how the cervix is holding up with a regular u/s, right? Like you would need to get a transvaginal? Or could they possibly see an issue with a regular u/s that would make them investigate more with a transvaginal?

They can tell cervical length with an ultrasound so that should give some clue if it's starting to shorten or open up.

umm, they can possibly tell what the cervix is doing by abdominal u/s if the baby isn't in the way, but most of the time they need to do transvaginal. With my scan monday they tried abdominal fist, but baby was blocking the view, so then they did transvaginal. They said they will always check abdominally first to see if they can avoid the other.

See, my OB told me that I would be high risk and checked but I don't see her till April 26th... My dr. said he won't be doing anything different (I think because baby isn't viable till around the time I see my OB anyways)... and I've been getting the worse pains! I asked my dr. if he could get them to do that and he was like "I don't know"... can they do that? Or something like that... I'm not sure if he just didnt' get what I was asying but I was hoping he'd call or fax in that add on and do a quick transvaginal to check my cervix... just because I had a preemie and I'm having all these crazy pains and I"m just paranoid. But he said they'll probably do that, but I know they won't just do a transvaginal... but I have heard of women who went for regular u/s and they called them back for transvaginal... So I was hoping that if something was going on already, a tummy u/s could tip them off.... Oh I sure can't wait to go to my OB!!

As far as i know, they can check with Abdominal u/s but even if they can get the measurement it can be quite skewed on the abdominal and the trans vaginal is more accurate. They sent me for one with DS because on on a normal u/s my cervix was measuring short, but it was perfectly normal when they did the Transvag. I know my Peri's office only does Transvag to check cervical length but every doctor is different.

They did an abdominal u/s on me and did a measurement of the cervix. I guess it's more accurate when it's transvag. but they can definately see and go from there.

The high risk specialist took a look at my cervix last week due to my prolapsed uterus. They did an abdominal scan first but the Dr wanted to see what was going on "down there" and they did the transvaginal one as well. That's when they measured the length and opening of my cervix. But it may be different in your case, since i have my uterus so far down.

Hopefully they will get the measurements for you. KUP!

They checked mine with an abdominal u/s, but she wasn't in the way so they got a good view. If something looks odd during an abdominal or they can't get it at all I would imagine they'd do a transvaginal to be certain.
