I actually only had to wait an hour, and from what others have told me, they only waited an hour too. The orange drink wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be and it's less than a can of soda. Only thing I noticed is that I was soooo sleepy the rest of the day. I just had my first GTT this past Friday and get another one at 28 weeks. I'll find out the results of this test and the AFP in two weeks. Hopefully my numbers passed this test so I don't have to do the three-hour ordeal at the lab.

I know that there is the 1 hour and the 3 hour. With my first (the only time i took the test) I was able to drink it at home and then come in one our to the minute after I drank it. They took my blood and I was on my way. I was only 15 minutes from the lab though.

I've worked at a lab before as a phlebotomist so I can answer these questions.
They have 1 hour and 3 hour tests. Also, some doctors do the test earlier than 28 weeks, but most do it at 28 weeks. Because I've had GD before I had to be screened at my first appt and I think she is planning to screen me again at 24 weeks.

As said, there is the one hour and 3 hour. I think they do the 3 hour one if you don't do as well as they would like on the 1 hour one.
I thought the orange drink was like sugary flat orange pop, I get it down if I just drink it quickly... BUT it never seems to sit in my tummy nicely so I prefer to just sit there and wait the hour, rather than walk around anywhere.

I've heard of some labs doing a 2 hour, but only once or twice. With all three of my pregnancies they would do a blood draw, have me drink that stuff (or eat a bunch of jelly beans) and then an hour later they would do another blood draw. Take some crackers or something along to settle your stomach AFTER the final blood draw. The liquid always makes me sick. It's sort of like chugging liquid sugar so if your stomach doesn't like sweets right now it won't set well. It's also common to not feel well for the remainder of the day.
Good luck! I hope you pass!

I've only done the one hour and only heard of the 1 and 3 hour glucose tests. I think the orange stuff if yummy but I love orange pop and it tastes a lot like that! Good Luck w/ your test.

Got ya... That makes more sense. I just had my ob appt last week and he didn't say anything to me about it yet that's why I was asking. I'm not looking forward to that. The drink and the wait, not a bigger...the wait with a toddler...siiiigh.

Last time they gave me the drink to take home. I drank it before my appt then headed there when it was time. That office had a phlebotomist in their office though. This time I have to go to an off-site lab.

I like OBs that do that. My last OB did it that way. They gave you the glucose drink to take home to use an hour before you came into your appt and drew your blood as soon as you got there. Much more convenient than having to sit around the lab.
The 3 hour test is a bigger pain in the butt as they have to draw your blood more often. I refuse the 3 hour test myself. If I flunk the 1 hour, I just go straight to the GD diet and start keeping a log for my OB. I have been trying real hard to follow a GD diet from the start though so if I flunk it I think I will be straight on insulin this go around.

I'm having this done at my next appt (24 weeks) and I got to take the bottle of orange stuff home. I have to drink it in 5 minutes 45 minutes prior to my appt (i think so they can guarantee the 1 hour mark.) Anyway, this will be in April for me.

I also got one at 16 weeks, and and supposed to get one again at 26 weeks. My CNM is doing it early and double because of a family history of gestational diabetes. They gave me a choice of a couple different drinks (the lemon-lime one tasted kind of like melted sherbet to me, certainly not great but not as hideous as the orange and grape ones people had warned me about).
One thing you might want to check, though... my midwife told me that I didn't have to do it 'fasting', and could eat some small snacks up to an hour before I went to the lab to help avoid feeling sick afterward. It might be worth checking with your doc on whether or not they want it to be a real fasting test or not.

I was never told to fast, only not to have any food or fluid the hour between drinking the stuff and the blood draw.
