And my 5 year old hasn't even began! Where we live we have 2 districts within miles of each other. We moved 4 miles from our last house in Feb of last year. We lived in District 1 (we'll refer to this as D1) and now live in District 2 (D2). Well we never really put much thought into it when we moved because we were told we could choose. O

It has taken me about 3 months to get a concrete answer as to what district we live in. I finally found out today (after seriously calling 10 different places) that we live in D2. Our main road to our sub splits between D1 and D2. We live closer to D1 but are in D2. Don't ask me haha. Not our school of choice. But to go to D1 we have to fill out a school of choice form. Fine. They have no issues swapping students between the districts but kids who live in D1 would get priority over Gage. Fine, I understand rules and follow them. But it comes to find out he could be waiting 2 weeks after school starts to find out if he gets in. Thats a long wait to start school.

So I now am going to have to enroll him in D2 which really isn't an issue. We wanted him in D1 because I went there for 2 years and we are more familiar with the district. We don't know much about D2. I've been on their website all morning attempting to figure out as much about them as I can. I have to print off their enrollment forms and get those filled out. We already missed kindergarten round up for him.

So, now the choice is, do we enroll him in D2 for possibly 2 weeks then switch him to D1 if he gets in or do we just stay in D2. My husband and I are going to have to discuss this when he gets up for the day.

All this to just get my kid into Kinder haha. I am so over it!

Sheesh. Maybe enroll him in D2 and also try to get him into D1 but if you end up liking D2 I would stick with that one rather than switching him to D1 in two weeks. But, if you end up hating D2 then I would go ahead and switch to D1 if you have that opportunity.

I agree with Carrie enroll him in D2, it's nice to have options. But if he gets into D1, will he permanently be part of D1 every year after? Or will he still have to wait to see if there is room? I would want him to start off at the same school every year, so if he has a chance of not getting into d1 next year I would stay with the d2. Do they have a site to show where they rank school wise and their test scores overall? We have a rating system here and all the test scores combined give the actual school a rating.

if he gets into D1 will he be in it permanently or will he have to reapply every year? that would be a huge deciding factor for me. I know some places, once they are in a different school they are can stay until they switch out of that school, but ive heard of others having to reapply to get into a school in a different district every year.

If he would have to re apply every year i would put him in D2 and leave him there, because other wise he could be bouncing back on forth between districts each year, and that could be tough on a kid, especially when it comes to making friends get familiar with teachers ect.

We dont live in a great district either im not looking forward to having to make all these arrangements when it comes time for school (i know its years away) honestly i hoping we wont be living here anymore, but if we are its a toss up between a private school or homeschooling

Can you speak to some parents who have their kids in D2 and see how they like it? I agree with Bree, if he has to reapply every year, that would be so annoying!

Choosing schools is something new to me as where we grew up we only had one school district to choose from..lol

But I would still enroll in D2 and go from there. You may like it. Also like others have said if its something you have ot do yearly to go to D1 that would be a deciding factor for me. It would have to be a pretty dang good school for me to go through that headache..lol

Good Luck

We have actually decided to send him to D2. I did call D1 and ask them about the reapplying, we would have to fill a form out every year but she said its typically only kindergartners that have to deal with this, however it does happen during other years sometimes. That right there sold me on not bothering because I don't want him to be in like 5th or 6th grade and having to wait.

I have been doing research on D2 and haven't had any bad news. It's a small district which is nice. Three schools total, elem, middle and high school. D2 has THIRTEEN elementary schools, 2 middles and 2 high schools.

So when my husband woke up, I laid out everything I had found out today and we decided to just go with our district. Now I just need to print off the enrollment forms and get those turned in.

I feel the same. I would say there should be a big difference in education between the two districts to deal with all of this!!

When we first moved into this house we honestly thought we were in D1. Then we heard through the grapevine we might not be. I lived up here years ago and went to D1 and liked it. I knew of the other district but honestly knew nothing about it. I think that just kinda stuck with us so when it finally came time for him to be in kinder, we just went with what we knew. But then all this came up and we finally decided it wasn't worth it. We'll send him to D2. We don't want to risk him possibly losing friends years down the road because something doesn't work out. I don't think there is any big difference in education, except that more then likely D2 is a smaller district so he would get more interaction in smaller classes.
