I know there have been several discussions about our babies feeding themselves recently..I admit, I haven't let Bryce do it yet. I don't think he would know how to! I feel like I'm behind on that now after reading everyone's posts (& seeing several pictures!).

I fix my own baby food (I have the baby bullet) and so all his food is pureed...When should I start trying to feed him actual solids? He has two bottom teeth...I'm just so afraid he will choke!

Isaac doesn't have any teeth and he doesn't choke at all. I give him small pieces of bread, cheese, chicken, fruit, etc.
You won't know how he will do until you try it.

^^ What she said As long as you watch him the whole time, he'll be fine. And if he gags there's the "hook and grab" where you hook your finger and scoop the obstruction out. Good luck!

I always watch Natalie when she eats closely. She might choke a little bit sometimes because she'll kind of gag and cough. She does that with her sippy cup too though. I just try to give her all soft foods, nothing that could get lodged in her throat that she could truly choke on. As long as you're not leaving him to eat unattended I think he'll do fine. Natalie eats boiled potatoes, rice, and all kinds of veggies. I've even let her have pasta and ground beef. She eats pretty much what we eat.

(Oh and Natalie just got her first tooth this week. We've been giving her food toothless for a while. She just gums it and mushes it in her mouth. They don't have to have teeth.)

No, not behind at all! I think many ppl wait until after the 1st bday for solids. But, the "baby led weaning" thing is becoming more mainstream so it may seem that way to you. But most parents, I think, are still more into doing pureeds than solids at this stage for your same reasons plus they feel more confident that baby is getting enough food. Here is a link to the baby led weaning I'm talking about.
Welcome to Baby Led Weaning | Baby Led Weaning

I like it bc it's easier to feed her when everyone else eats. But I'm also spoon feeding her applesauce, yogurt, and rice cereal alternately bc sometimes the food we're eating isn't something she can eat. Most of the time she just flings her food everywhere or feeds it to the dog anyhow. But she's still nursed a lot. So, I have no worries.

p.s. Bryce is adorable in that picture thread! So handsome!

Miranda is my 4th and I always worry about the first 'solid' food that they feed themselves. I'm very conservative when it comes to what I give my babies. I always start with the baby yum yums and puffs and just very tiny pieces of other foods. So far I've given Miranda banana, scrambled eggs, chicken, pancake, and today croissant. She is eating it all like a champ and she has no teeth. This is really adventurous for me. But I've been listening to you ladies.

She feeds herself finger foods (Mum-mums, puffs, small pieces of what we're eating) but she doesn't feed herself baby food yet. I give her a spoon, but she just holds it while I feed her. She hasn't figured it out yet.

I was also nervous about it, we also use the bullet with everything pureed. However, Omair just started grabbing food from us and sticking it in his own mouth and fussing for what we were eating. Now he grabs the spoon from me as I feed him his pureed foods, much to my dismay! I eventually give in and let him make the mess with the spoon for a bit so he doesn't start screaming. He also just now got two teeth in, but they're just poked through the gumline, not full in yet.

Just today we were at home depot looking at plants and he grabbed and ate a leaf. sheesh.

Anyway, I waited until Omair let s know he was ready. There's no need to rush it or feel behind! Your baby will let you know!!

I started giving Holden pieces of vegetables like zucchini and carrots, obviously bigger pieces so he cant shove the whole thing in his mouth. Big enough for him to hold in his hand and kind of gnaw on. He only has his 2 bottom teeth so I know he cant bite off pieces but he loves the veggies

LOL, thats too cute. It sounds like something Kye would do! He is CRAZY over food. As far as solids go, I give him very small pieces of whatever I am eating. At first he would gag a lot but he has gotten used to the technique and texture so he is fine with it.
