In light of today's news of the death of Usama Bin Laden I'm sure a lot of us are reflecting on Sept 11th. So, where were you on 9/11/01? And am I the only one who can not believe it's already been close to 10 years!!??!!

I was waiting in my car with my mom to take my road test for my driver's license when I first heard the news on the radio.

I was just getting to school, and my boyfriend told me. I was in Algebra class when the Pentagon got hit.

Well I was asleep because I'm in Australia. I was 11 and woke up and went to watch telly but there was 'boring' stuff on every channel so I went to do something else. Mum then got up and I was told what it actually was.

I woke up with dh as he was getting ready for work, and we turned on the news like always and we couldnt believe what we were seeing we stared at the TV in shock as we watched airplanes crash into buildings and tried to wrap our head around this at 6am. I yelled for my sister to come see the TV as she lived with us then and was also getting ready for work. I remember how numb I felt and how our nation/lives had just totally changed forever and what great sadness I felt for those who lost their lives and those who lost loved ones. I hope to never ever feel that horrible feeling again.

I was working a couple miles from the Pentagon. I had just gotten in to work and there started to be rumors flying around. The internet was totally frozen, so we went down to the guy manning the front desk to crowd around his radio. Of course there were reports of bombs going off all over downtown DC (false) and reports of a fourth plane headed to the white house (true). Finally someone brought out a TV from the media room, and we all watched the towers fall.
The next few days were surreal as there were armed soldiers all over the city. I felt like I was suddenly living in another country.

I was in my senior year of college sitting in my morning math class. The fire alarm went off and we were told to go back to our dorms. We had had a few bomb treats on campus so we figured that was what had happened. I remember that a bunch of us were celebrating that our class was cancelled, we thought is was just another bomb treat. I was commuting so I didn't have a dorm. My friend and I decided to go to breakfast. As we walked by one of the main buildings on campus we saw people gathered around a TV in the lobby so we joined them just in time to see the second plane hit the towers. We were all in shock. I tried to call my Dad to see if I should come home right away or stay where I was. We lived right next to Peach Bottom Nuclear Plant and my college was close to 3 mile Island Nuclear Plant. We heard rumors that those plants may be attacked also. Anyway, I couldn't get a hold of anyone because the cell phones where locked up. My mom worked on a government base and was in lock down so I had no hope of getting a hold of her. After the Pentagon was hit I decided it was time to high tail it back to my parents house. I'll never forget...I was driving past 3 Mile Island as I heard on the Radio that a 4th plane had crashed in Shanksville PA. I was scared to death.

Sitting in 11th grade U.S. Government class. We were all told to go to the library where we watched it all on TV. I get chill bumps just thinking about it.

I was a junior in high school and was in art class. My teacher always let us listen to the radio so we heard it right after it happened and then was listening to it as the second tower was hit.

I was in my apartment in graduate school (the first time I lived away from home) getting ready for class and I turned the tv on after the first tower was hit, but the second was standing...and then while I was watching, the second tower was hit. I remember thinking "those towers are going to fall". And of course they did. I walked to class but when I got there, the teacher canceled it. I remember telling my friend Liz what happened because she had no idea but she didn't understand the gravity without seeing the images herself. Then I went back the the apartment and watched the footage non-stop for I don't know how many hours.

I was in 10th grade and we watched the towers hit (and fall) in my world history class and many of the kids were saying, "who cares? It's not like we know anyone in New York anyway." I really didn't like most of my classmates.

I think the gravity of the situation is very hard for many kids to grasp. On the 1 year anniversary I was teaching 7th grade. I remember getting angry with the students because during the moment of silence they were laughing and talking to each other. These are the same kids who thought it was funny when the people in the "showers" scene in the video of The Diary of Anne Frank were naked. No concept that those people were going to die.

This thread is making me feel old. Haha!
I was driving to work when the first plane hit. I heard about it on the radio, but at that point everyone thought it was an accident. By the time I parked my car and walked into work, the second plane had hit and everything had changed. I will never ever forget that day or the weeks following. It was a scary time. We were scared for my little brother who had recently joined the army. We were hearing about duct taping windows and anthrax. It still saddens me just as much today to think about it as it did that day. I was a newlywed and Wes and I lived in a basement apartment (EW!) that had no tv, so we huddled together on our mattress on the floor and listened to the radio/news at night after work for probably at least a week straight after the attacks.

Heather is right about kids not understanding it. Even though I was a junior in HS I didn't really feel affected by it at that time. I was completely clueless what it even meant. I just knew the terrorist were trying to kill our people. Looking back on it, I wish I had known more, or was at least older to have understood it more.
While everyone was talking about him being killed last night, all could think was their is going to be a retaliation against us. Just because he was the head guy, he has several men waiting to take his place and do his job.

I don't know that they really do retaliation, do they? Ever since 9-11 happened, I've heard many times that they have attacks planned out years and years and years in advance.

I totally get that, and even I didn't understand as much then as I do now but the complete ignorance that some of my classmates showed was horrifying. I'm not even going to repeat some of the stuff they said but it was awful. I felt bad for my teacher because I'm pretty sure it took everything she had not to reach over and smack them upside the head.

UGH... I started my student teaching assignment a few months after 9/11. I am so glad I wasn't in the classroom the day it happened!!
Stacey .. I know, I was 21! LOL I remember feeling very numb and just crying and crying. Some of the images are forever burned in my mind. I remember thinking, "What is that stuff falling from the buildings"...Then I realized what it was and the news media cut away from it. I'll never forget that.

Speaking of kids not getting it, I teach fifth grade, so this morning before P.E. (where they're at now), I showed them some pictures and video clips from 9/11. What is crazy to me is that most of my students weren't even alive!!! Some were 1 yr old. They couldn't grasp how horrible and life-changing 9/11 was. Oh well, maybe they will understand one day.

I think this is a universal thing though...I don't think many of us really grasp how horrible things were before our time either, even though as adults we can understand it better. Its different if you "lived through it".
