So I'm sitting at my desk trying to get some work done while Claire plays in her Pack-N-Play. She is playing with one of my calculators...it is a larger one that I got free from somewhere, and she LOVES to play with it.

I'm talking on the phone, and she is looking at me very mischievously. I'm scheduling an appointment and giving my information to the lady on the phone, and Claire just keeps giving me these weird looks like she is up to something, but she's just sitting there. Finally I go over to her and I just about had a heart attack...she had pried the number 3 key off of the calculator and was chewing on it I don't know how she got it off, because I tried to pry the others off and couldn't do it with my bare hands. The key is about 1/2 an inch square, so she definitely could have choked on it.

I guess I'm posting this story so maybe someone will think twice about giving their kids something to play with that isn't designed to be a toy...it really didn't cross my mind that she would be able to loosen the keys. Thank goodness this first-time-Mommy-mistake didn't cause any harm

It might take a few hours before my heart stops racing...

How scary! I gave Alec a pen and was sitting right next to him when I realized the bottom cap was missing. It was in his mouth! I had made sure it was on tightly but he somehow got it off. It was shaped like a bullet so had he swallowed it... Things like this do make our hearts race, it's so frightening how fast things can happen.

I'm glad your dd is OK.

Yes, very glad she is ok! Heidi does those things daily. With the older children it's near impossible to baby-proof EVERYTHING. She's never choked though thank goodness!

While yes it was a mistake, trust me when I say you will make more. You were there and you caught it before anything happened so consider it a learning lesson. And even when you think you got everything safe she'll still figure out something new to keep you on your toes.

Thanks, Alisha, and to everyone else for the encouragement. It is so hard to be "on" 24/7 and try to keep them safe. I have been judging myself all day...thanks for the understanding

Please don't judge yourself, we all do these things! It is very hard to babyproof EVERYTHING and they do have a way of getting into things you think are secure.

Glad she is okay!

I'm so glad she is ok! I've done plenty of things as a first time mommy and a 2nd time mommy that made my heart stop. I just learn from them, you are still a great mommy.

So glad that she's okay!
I always worry about the other kids leaving little toys lying around that Miranda could choke on and am constantly picking things up.
