This is the best part. If she's never had it before, she'll be like, what's this? Once she gets the slightest taste of that icing though, it's all over. That's the smash part!

Soph, we did a smash for her portraits last month. I had it in my mind to use one of them for her birthday invites. We'll do another one for her actual birthday.
My advice, only use a cupcake. Let the guests eat the real cake. Give it to her in her high chair, so the mess stays localized and smaller than if you used an actual cake. Two outfits is a really wise idea, and have the camera ready.

Chocolate cake will be most obvious on the photos. But brightly coloured icing makes for fantastic pre-smash snapshots! I would also put the candle on the cupcake if you plan on doing the whole candle thing.
