From what I can gather, a lot of people are thinking of doing smash cakes. Im so keen for Eva to do this.
So im wondering, are you all planning on doing it at their party or another day?
I think doing it at the party would be cool but maybe too difficult? and I really want to take a lot of photos so that would also make it difficult with lots of people there.

I'll do it at her party. I usually have two outfits. Her main b-day outfit, then a cute outfit to put her in to get messy. Cake is usually done last (for us) so I can just clean her up when she's done. I feel a smash cake is a must. I love looking back at DD1's 1st b-day.

Since we have no family here in Nashville, we are doing her big first birthday party back home in Indiana on the 30th so we'll do a cake smash there but also on her real first birthday here we'll do a small one for us

I'm really looking forward to how she'll react. I'm hoping she won't cry and be timid about touching the cake. To answer your question...we will have a smash cake at her Bday party on the 30th. Long story, but I couldn't get her actual Bday weekend off, so I'm taking the following weekend off. I've been thinking that we might do a small cupcake or something on her actual bday.

Yes, we are Like the other ladies mentioned, have an extra outfit and also some rags or wipes for clean-up. I can't recall which store bakery we used with DD1's first birthday, but they offered a free smash cake with the regular one, which was very nice!

Edit: I just remembered the store: Publix

This is the best part. If she's never had it before, she'll be like, what's this? Once she gets the slightest taste of that icing though, it's all over. That's the smash part! Let her love it, and you'll love it too.

Soph, we did a smash for her portraits last month. I had it in my mind to use one of them for her birthday invites. We'll do another one for her actual birthday.

My advice, only use a cupcake. Let the guests eat the real cake. Give it to her in her high chair, so the mess stays localized and smaller than if you used an actual cake. Two outfits is a really wise idea, and have the camera ready. Chocolate cake will be most obvious on the photos. But brightly coloured icing makes for fantastic pre-smash snapshots! I would also put the candle on the cupcake if you plan on doing the whole candle thing.

Yes we shall do one at his party (cake is also last for us) with my whole family over.

He will most likely be in a diaper only anyway because it is always around 100 degrees here in July and we have no a/c in the main living area of our home (a/c is not put in homes in Western Washington unless you install it yourself) so its super hot and babies run around in only diapers.

We're doing a Brobee smash cake and it will be done at his party. I'll just strip him down to a diaper and let him go at it

Same here. A lot of times at Publix if you buy a 1st bday cake they give you a smaller smasher cake for free. I did this for my daughter's 1st bday and I have some PRECIOUS pictures of her with it all over her face and wearing a princess tiara
