We just got back from Juliana's appointment with Early Intervention that we set up because she's not babbling at 9 months. It went really well and I feel so much better now.
In their evaluation, Juliana scored in the 99th percentile in both fine motor skills and problem solving, and above average in everything else except communication, where she scored mildly delayed. She's also working very hard on crawling, so they think she just has been focusing on the other things and is too busy to work on her language right now. They explained that sometimes development will focus on one or two areas and the other areas could lag in the mean time. They sent us home after a 45 minute assessment. They did say to come back in 3 months if she's still not babbling.
Woo hoo! What a relief.

Glad that made you feel better!
I've really heard that too, that some kids concentrate on one thing and not another. Eva has only just started saying 'dada' and its not too often.

Yay! Aaron has always been more physical and slow with babbling/verbal skills as well.
If it makes you feel any better he has started babbling b's, g's, m's, and n's recently. It's not all the time but it's there. Maybe she'll start to pick it up within the next couple weeks as well.

Glad your appointment went well. I'm sure she'll be "talking" your ear off before long. Seems like Jr kind of goes through spurts...I'll notice that he seems to not be doing it as much, and then next thing I know he won't hush. lol

Thats great! Gives me hope that Hunter is focusing on his talking, hi 5s, and rolling a ball rather than crawling. lol

That's very good news. Leah still doesn't babble much either. It kinda freaks me out as well, so you're more than welcome to vent/worry to me anytime

I'm so glad the appointment made you feel better! I just think that babies can't be good at everything all at once. I'm sure Juliana will start chatting once she has the crawling thing perfected.

That's great! I wish I had some reassurance about some things too. While he is babbling, he's not really responding to things like it seems some of these other babies are doing. I don't know how to explain it but I'm starting to wonder if he's having some delays, especially since he's still behind as far as most of the physical stuff goes. I keep telling myself to give it some more time but I wish I could have a more thorough assessment like that.

Michele, You can have Vincent evaluated through EI if you want. We went through the pedi at my insistence but you can contact them directly. Just google "Early Intervention" and your county name. They even have a form online that you can take to evaluate whether to make an appointment. Everything is paid for by tax dollars so there's no charge for any of it.

That's awesome news!! Yeah, I think babies really sometimes are focusing so much on learning certain things that other things are put on the backburner. My daughter is the complete opposite. She's a talker...she has always been a talker...but the physical milestones didn't occur until just recently, and she is still "behind" compared to a lot of the other babies.

So glad the appointment went well! I'm sure I told you before, but Emmett also does not really babble...we are kinda in a wait and see as well.

This ^^^ When Ethan started army crawling and getting better with his gross and fine motor skills, his babbling stopped almost completely. Now that he's more completely mastered getting mobile...he is babbling a LOT more. They do tend to focus on one or another at a time so I'm sure Juliana will be just fine =)

Thanks again for mentioning this to me. I did the assessment you sent me and it was very helpful. I'm calling our EI program tomorrow to make an appointment and hopefully I will get some reassurance too.
