How common is this? Anyone have any experience with a LO having an allergy to sunscreen?

I put sunscreen on Sydney for the 1st time on Monday ..I then went away until Friday for work to Rhode Island. When I got back, my DF had told me she broke out all over her upper back and shoulders (which is exactly where I put the sunscreen). She also had a bit on her arms ( a bit of sunscreen went on there too). I had used Aveeno baby sunscreen. I realize now that it is one of the worst ones. So -- while I was in the states, I did some shopping and bought one of those California baby sunscreen sticks...I put a tiny bit of that on her on Friday (almost like a test patch). She broke out again! Now I am at a loss. I've read that the one's that contain pure titanium oxide or zinc oxide may be better but now I am scared to put anything on her.

What are you currently using? Have you ever seen a reaction?

I'm taking her to the doctor to figure out what to do now.

I am surprised she broke out with the California Baby. You might also want to try Neutragen (sp?) Baby. Graces allergist had us using that and Vanicream sunscreen just because she used to have really bad eczema. I would definitely get it checked out though. I have a severe allergy to paba but I think that has been taken out of most sunscreens.

I've been using Neutragena without any problems so far, and Stella has sensitive skin. Another baby in our library playgroup just had a bad reaction to sunscreen, but I think it was Water Babies. Sometimes the really hippy stuff has plant compounds in it, which can actually trigger allergies, but California Baby is normally good about it. What is in the ingredient list?

My older daughter breaks out to sunscreen, pretty much any kind. It is way worse with some than it is with others. Our pedi said if she doesn't seem bothered by the breaking out then its more likely that its just an overreaction to her pores being clogged rather than a real allergic reaction to it.

yeah..it didn't seem to bother her, but the rash looked nasty. It almost looked like a blistering rash - I can't believe it didn't bother her!

With the california baby, I only put a bit on her -- she didn't break out nearly as much but there were still red bumps on her where I put it. I asked a pharmacist about the ingredients in Aveeno and he said they were all very standard ingredients.

More than a few people have told me to use Neutrogena, so I think i'm going to try that one next on a small test patch. I just feel so bad! I put sunscreen on her thinking it would be good and she broke out so bad..I feel guilty putting anything on her now

My daughter has baby exzema and VERY sensitive skin...I use water babies on her and it seems like the only thing I've tried that seems to be GOOD for her skin! It seems to help the eczema better than any cream I've tried.

I hope you can find a sunscreen that Sydney isn't sensitive to, poor baby! Glad she doesn't seem to be bothered by it.
