So my DD was born with Mitral Stenosis, which is a narrowing of her mitral valve. Her parachute valve doesn't function properly either. There are 4 stages of severity. Trivial, mild, moderate and severe. So she has had follow up appointments since birth with her pediatric cardiologist. Tomorrow is her latest follow up appointment. Although she hasn't progressed from mild, I'm still always nervous. The bigger she gets, the harder it is for a defective heart to keep up with a child. They said she is doing well, but not to rule out that she may need open heart surgery some day. I try not to dwell on that, or I'd go crazy. Anyhow I was hoping for a few Ts&Ps from you ladies. I'm sure all is fine, she is gaining weight well, and she hasn't had any breathing episodes. As a Mom we always worry, and sometimes have to keep ourselves from getting over dramatic and thinking the worst.
Thanks Mamas!!

Thinking of you! Any kind of heart defect (even if it's classified as 'mild') has to be scary for a Mom. I can't imagine hear the words "she might have to have open heart surgery some day"; you're one strong Mama. Let us know how the appointment goes.

Absolutely mama my baby sister was born with 4 holes in her heart (she also has down syndrome) and had to have open heart surgery at 8 months old (and only 10 pounds) it was scary but she was in good hands ♥

Thank you ladies! We got great news. Although she still has the problem, it will never repair itself, but it hasn't progressed. It has stayed exactly the same. We are just to watch out for any distress signals such as blue around the mouth, and fingernails, or shortness of breath. Other than that looming on my mind when she's being very active, I have nothing to worry about!!! I couldn't be happier. DH was so happy too. We took her to the mall and DH let her have ice cream and pick out a toy from the toys r us. That is VERY unlike DH so I know he was nervous. lol
I almost bawled my eyes out in the toys r us when I got to thinking about all the amazing blessings we've been given as a family. Thanks again for your support ladies.

That's wonderful to hear! So glad she's doing so well.
Will she ever have to have open heart surgery to repair it? My girlfriend's son was born with a problem and they sent him straight to sick kids where they inserted a shunt into his head. They still watch it (I think he's almost 10 years old now), and go back annually. They figure one day they'll have to replace it, but won't touch it til certain criteria is met - which is great, but it stinks that it still looms on and on. I'm wondering if you're sorta stuck in the same hamster wheel.
It is fantastic news though. So happy for you.

So glad she's doing well! I have mild mitral valve stenosis along with the mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation. I'm preoof that you can have a normal life even though your valves are a little wonky.
My brother had pulmonary stenosis when he was born and had open heart surgery when he was 6 months old. Granted, this was back in the 80s, and things have changed since then. However, he's healthy and other than the scar and misshapen chest from it not healing well, you'd never guess he had that happen.

Lauren. That is very comforting to know. You know how doctors are. They don't want to be liable for anything so you don't get any straight answers. So you were able to play sports and everything without hesitation?

Yup. I just have to be a little careful and mindful of my heartrate, and if I start getting chest pains I stop immediately. They weren't too fond of my playing contact sports, but other than that no problems. I got to international level competitions with horseback riding with no issues whatsoever.
