Ok, so my girls were diagnosed with "skeeter syndrome" yesterday. Basically they are allergic to mosquito bites. Ever since Kaitlyn was little we would have to load her with bug spray when we are out because she would swell with every mosquito bite. Well, her dr didnt think it was to bad and just said to give her benadryl when it got bad. Well that was with her OLD dr. I never brought it up with the new dr, until Kaileigh got bit a few times while we're outside. She swells too. So after she had one that was VERY swollen I took her to her pedi yesterday since they are open until 12pm on Saturdays. He looked at her and her sister, and said they both have skeeter syndrome. So I have to use bug spray if we are outside in the evenings, AND they both have to take zrytec everyday because zyrtec has been know to prevent the allergic reaction from mosquitoes. Just thought I'd let you all know in case anyone else's child has a reaction. I had never heard of it, and sort of laughed when he said thats what they have.

My step-daughter is very allergic. We would get mad because every time she would come to the house, she would have huge sores all over. Her mom said I'm sorry, we like to go fishing and stuff...i was like don't let your kid slow you down or anything. lol I felt bad for her, though...beautiful little girl, but had scars all over her face and arms from bites.

I feel bad for the girls that must be miserable. Although I had to laugh at "skeeter" sounds like a man from the back woods saying, "them girls got the skeeter sickness" sorry...I had to laugh. You think they could have come up with a better name for it.

lol lol... The name does sound funny but my nephew Ziyon has this and was diagnosed when he was abt 1 yr. He is 7 now. It really does suck to have this and he is pretty miserable in the summer. He has allergies really bad in general and he takes a prescription med.

My daughter Cadence is severely allergic to mosquito bites too. They swell up hugeeee and benadryl helps a little but not much. And for some reason mosquitos are drawn to her more than any of the other kids!

LOL "skeeter syndrome" sounds so cute, reminds me of Skeeter from Muppet Babies.
Anyway, I didn't know it was a syndrome!!! I am pretty sure I have it too. I think I must react differently to different mosquitos (I'm assuming there's a variety) because sometimes I'll get huge pink welts but other times I get huge purple welts. SOOOO insanely sore and itchy and I'm downing the benadryl and put ice on them, but but it doesn't seem to help much. Its not the end of the world but it totally isn't fun. I agree that prevention is the best thing. I wonder if my daughter has it?

Normal mosquito bites are bad enough. I can't imagine how much it must itch if you are allergic too! So I went to forestry school and my husband stills works in the woods every day. He and some friends have a theory that you can build up your tolerance to mosquitos. He only wears bug spray for the black flies. At the beginning of the summer he reacts really strongly to mosquito bites, but at the end of the summer they barely show up. It probably only works for people who aren't actually allergic, but for the two summers I worked in the woods, I noticed something similar.

Huh... wonder if I have that. Whenever I get a bite, it swells up to at least the size of a quarter & throbs in addition to itching. It takes the bites forever to go away & they leave a mark for several weeks.
I've never noticed it with Ethan. I've been using the California Baby bug spray on both kids so far this spring. It seems to be working; I haven't seen any bites on either of them & we're outside a lot.

Never heard of it but it sounds horrible Bites are bad enough without reacting that way to them. Sorry they have it. We dont have much for misquitoes here where I live.

I'm sorry. I've always had mosquitoes eat me alive but I've never had a reaction like that. I'm hoping it's something they grow out of.

Well, Im taking her back to the pedi tomorrow. I just called them. They have gotten A LOT bigger. The one on her head was the diameter of a quarter yesterday now its much bigger and they all now have a yellow/white looking center and she is running a temp of 100.3 that shows she has an infection with them. The nurse said to give her benadry and tylenol to help with the itching, pain, and fever. Im kind of scared as google doesnt help my fears. Google keeps telling me that she may need to be issued an epi-pen. I've never seen them this bad not even on my oldest that has the reaction.

Sorry to hear that. It's pretty tough to avoid mosquitos in the summer. Don't let Google freak you out too much! Let us know what the pedi says.

I just googled Skeeter Syndrome and got this thread. My daughter was bitten a half-dozen times last night and is covered in huge, extremely swollen rashes with white, pus-filled middles today. No fever that I can detect, but the bites are oozy and her bitten appendages are very hot and swollen to the touch. She's 5. I did douse her in hydrocortozone and gave her benedryl but think she'll need more to get through the summer. This stinks!

Reason: Something filled with pus apparently spells a forbidden word ;)

I have 18 month old identical twins. One has Skeeter Syndrome and one does not. All summer we thought he was being invaded by spiders, but there were no bite marks, only bubble blisters. Yesterday T2 was calling me and had a mosquito on his arm. I swatted it and decided to watch the bite and see if it caused the reaction. This morning, 12 hours later, the bite had swelled considerably and was producing bubble blisters. I asked the pre-school teacher to watch it today. A couple of weeks ago this happened and the bite turned into a wicked sore that I was convinced was a brown recluse bite. The blister exploded and wept for a full day. It has since healed and small scar remains. We have our 18 month check up tomorrow and I am bringing this up with the doc. I hate he has to go through this!!!! We live in GA and will never be able to hide from mosquitos! Thank goodness it is fall!!
