After Aaron's epic Cheerio spit up this morning I've got to ask...how are the other reflux babies doing? Anyone else still spitting up?
Aaron's reflux doesn't seem to be getting any better. He's on axid right now and it has helped his sleep and fussiness but I really wish he would stop spitting up. We seem to be passed his choking episodes but I'm frustrated. He had an upper GI done back in October (when he was 3 months old) and that came back normal with 0% reflux yet he still spits up all. the. time. He's allergic to dairy, soy, and banana and is on nutramigen formula. The nutramigen is only partially hydrolyzed dairy. Is it possible he's reacting to that (which is possible if he has a more severe dairy allergy) or am I not understanding something? His ped. just keeps upping his axid without looking into other possible causes even though his test came back normal. Thoughts?

It sounds more like the allergy. My DD had reflux and the same milk/soy allergy as a baby. She has since outgrown both. I found that when she began sitting up, and crawling her reflux started back up a little bit. it's all the effort needed in the tummy muscles to do those things. With the milk/soy allergy she too was on nutramigen. My pedi told us that it was entirely man made and had no milk proteins what so ever so it shouldn't bother her unless there was another issue.
Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to get a second opinion. If you don't feel listened to, that is also another reason. I hope Aaron feels better soon. There is nothing like seeing your LO throw up often. Just on a side note....don't rule out that his throwing up could be actually sickness related at times. You know, ear infections or flu. He may be having a hard time with the oats/wheat in cheerios if he has other food allergies. Maybe a gluten issue?

I dont mean this to sound harsh at all. I really think it's just something your going to have to deal with and get used to. My oldest had GERD (google it if your not familiar). Lots of gastro apts. GI line tests, see how much she actually digested, etc... It was awful. Didnt begin to outgrow it until 1 1/2. She couldn't tolerate any acidic foods until about 2 1/2. I spent a lot of time asking myself what I could do to help?, why is this happening to her? I will never understand why some Dr's give antacids because they only "calm" the feelings associated with spitting. Does he cry, and scream when he pukes? If not, I wouldnt be giving him that. With my oldest she was on Reglan to speed up the digestion process, so she has to eat smaller, thicker, more frequent meals, and yes, she still threw up, but it was easier on her. Reglan was a border line medicine at that time, and even now, it's rarely prescribed because some of the effects are worse then the vomiting, so not all Dr's are ok to try it and see if it helps. And about the formula, we had to try different ones, but the more expensive didnt do any different then the soy, but I know he cant have that since he has an allergy. I would push your Dr to actually listen, and if he wont, find a new one. GERD and chronic ear infections were the reason I left my first pedi. He didnt listen to me at all. Thank goodness I switched. It changed my life as a parent.
Kaileigh still pukes, but not near as bad as her sister. She pukes right after bottles, so Im beginning to think as soon as bottles are gone she will be better. She doesnt puke with sippy cups or food.

Actually if you read the ingredients casein hydrolysate is one of the top ingredients. It's partially hydrolyzed meaning they break down the dairy protein to the point where it's not an issue for most babies; those with a more severe allergy can't be on it.
I don't think it's the cheerios just because most of the time when he spits up it's just formula and because he had them at the same time as his formula this morning.

I really don't know, but my son, who also has GERD and did as an infant, is four and still has GERD teribbly to the point that it affects his asthma and allergies! He is currently on several meds because his GERD is the main trigger that is causing his severe allergies and asthma. This has taking us 4 years and 2 docs to figure this out . I really think you just need a second opinion.

Please don't take offense to this but there are more signs that the child needs medication than just screaming while spitting up. The fact that he doesn't sleep, doesn't want to take a bottle, and whines and fusses all day without the medication indicates that he needs medication. I didn't ask about whether or not he needs medication. I was asking if after doing an upper GI that came back with 0% reflux would indicate it would possibly be from an allergy to his formula.

Wow... I'd be worried its the allergy, too. If he doesn't have reflux than the stomach discomfort he's feeling (not sleeping, fussing, etc) has to be from SOMETHING. My friend was just diagnosed with food allergies a few months ago & an upset stomach was the biggest symptom she had, along with mouth numbness. Her Family Dr put her on reflux meds & it helped some with her stomach problems, but they didn't resolve until she saw a different Dr who refered her to an allergist. Once she cut out ALL the things she was allergic to, her stomach problems are totally gone (she's allergic to crazy things like potato and corn plus the common ones like soy).
Personally, I would find a new pedi. Take your GI test results & get a 2nd opionon. Will Tricare refer you to a pedi off base? I changed pedis because I didn't like how they treated me & Ethan during his ear infections. I know allergists normally don't see babies until 1 year, but maybe call around & see if you can find somone who would see him now. Poor baby... food allergies can be so nasty & often only get worse with repeated exposure to the allergen.
