Wow Shantel -- what an amazing story. You must be very proud of yourself and what you overcame! You story had tears in my eyes..I just can't picture being a little girl coming home from school wondering if there was any food to eat.

You are an amazing woman! I am truely impressed by your ability to overcome such hardships in your childhood. I have an utmost respect for you!

I am so sorry about the loss of a would be brother to you. No words can describe how horrible I feel about what happened to that innocent baby.

Loved your photos! You were way adorable I have nots of questions already LOL but I will wait and see if they are answered first.

Oh my gosh, I have to say you did indeed have a rough childhood (as you've mentioned before). It brought tears to my eyes and made me realize it seems there are a lot more people who have went through a rough childhood. I couldnt imagine having to be the adult to your siblings when you were just a child yourself. I cant wait to read more about you. Oh and Im glad you told us how your name was said. I have a HS buddy who is Shantel, and it's Shan- tel so I always assumed it was the same.

Shantel, your story is haunting and amazing.

I kinda chuckle about you and your sisters all having S names! (We have E names in my family.)

Did you keep in touch with Mrs. Wilson even through high school? She sounds like a small safe haven in your life.

How did you "know" that college would be an escape for you? I'm just blown away by how you applied and did all that stuff for college on your own. I really really respect your work to get in. (It's so much work to take on your own!)

You are such a strong woman! Can't wait to read more.

Ok Are your parents still together? Did life get better for them? How did your sisters fare? Are you close with your mom today?

Shantel, you are an amazing woman to come through all of that hardship. I can't imagine what that must of been like growing up but kudos to you for getting out and making the best of the situation.

Wow!! I have so much respect for you and for anyone who rises above their past to make a better life for themselves. I'm a big sister too; I can feel your pride when you talk about your siblings. How wonderful that you were able to be that positive, strong, female role model that they needed. Your story is inspirational.

I think its awesome that you did college on your own. I knew a lot of people in the Army who enlisted to make their lives better & I have so much respect for anyone who refuses to just accept the situation they were raised with. You must be an incredible role modle for your children; you aren't just telling them they can be anything they want, you've shown them its possible.

I love the pictures. You all have such great smiles. I'm sorry you had to take on such responsibility so young, but you really seem to have stepped up to the plate. My mom sometimes drives me crazy, and she was nothing but loving and supportive. It must be hard to have to take that role with your mother. You are definitely the bigger person.

I can't believe you have come so far in life...that is soooo amazing. I hear stories all the time of people's hardhips (mostly on movies...like Precious), but to hear from someone that you "know" it's just so crazy and heartbreaking. I just can't imagine a mother treating their child so horribly. I can't wait to hear about your DH and kiddos!!
