At what age will you allow your kids to have a cell phone?

When they have a job and pay their own bill. If there was ever a situation that i thought they needed to have a cell phone before that I would allow them to use mine or Dereks

I would consider one of those firefly type phones around 11. However if they want a phone like mine or even just a regular phone, they have to have a job to pay for it. Or earn the money by doing things around the house. I would say 14 earliest for a regular phone that they would pay for.

UNLESS, we are at a time in our lives where they are going to and from school alone or something, like if I am working and can't be there to pick them up or they don't get the school bus. I would just hate for them not be able to contact anyone or have me contact them in an emergency.

I don't know a lot about current cell phone plans but there must be something that only allows them to call certain numbers and have limited use.

Lori, there is. Thats what the firefly phone is. I believe there are certain other types of phones out there as well that do the same thing but I don't know the names.

that is exactly what my kids would have if they needed something before they were able to pay for their own phone.

You know I really don't know. There is a part of me that says when they can pay for it themselves. But then there is that part of me that says times have changed and cell phones are the norm..lol

But I really like that firefly one, if she got one before 11. Man I just don't know..lol
