Ok, this is totally random, I know, especially for me, snce I'm not an animal person. But for the first time ever the other day when I saw someone's dog on their lap in the front seat of a car, it suddenly occured to me how dangerous it is for pets to be in cars. I guess I'm thinking about carseats for kids now and of course adults need to be buckled in too (although when I was a kid, we would sit in the back of a station wagon all the time) and I was thinking if you have a pet in the car during a crash, it could be very bad.

Has anyone else thought of this? I guess there's really nothing that can be done for it, but if I did have an animal, I'd be so nervous to take it in the car.

You read my mind! It happened to me yesterday actually. A lady in a car pulled out in front of me and she had a dang dog in her lap! I was so pissed. I think the dog actually blocked her view because I had to slam on my breaks and she should have seen me clear as day. I just shook my head at her. I think IF you have to take a dog with you it should remain in the back seat. Even the front passenger seat is very dangerous for animals. I also dont get why people take their dogs places with them causally ( I understand vet runs etc...). My dog is a 95lb black lab and Im sorry but she can remain home in our AC relaxing on her bed. No need to take her with me. We also used to have a chichuaha (sp) (8 lbs) and he remained home anytime we left.

I used to take my dog in for puppy training once per week and we had kind of a little harness thing that buckled her into a specific seat by fastening to the seat belt area. I still don't think it was particularly safe but it at least kept her from jumping up and blocking my view.

I never really thought about it before, but I don't have any pets. I do know that my sister has one of those seatbelt things for her dog that Mariah was talking about. But that is very dangerous.

All I have is a cat and everytime I take her to the vet she poops and pukes all over the place so we don't do many car rides. But yeah, that sounds really dangerous. If I can't text and drive others can't have a big fluffy dog on their laps.

s) with us casually. She sat on the floor. She did not stay in the car by herself for long, just long enough to prepay for some gas. I also used to take her and her son (who is at least 90 lbs) to my parents every Saturday so they could play with my parent's dog. Taking them places in the car that does not always end up at the vet's, helps dogs with anxiety about car rides...if you only take them when you are going to the vet, it is associated with unpleasant things. 2 of our 3 dogs love car rides, no matter where we end up going, i think it is bc we arent always ending up at the vet's.
