I know the princess theme is not very original for girls. Probably 50% or more of 1 year old girls that have a theme go with princess. But I've been reading a lot of booking about English monarchs (by Phillipa Gregory) and I've been thinking of going about the princess theme from a more traditional perspective. For example, on the invites (actually e-vites) I'm thinking about saying "Her Royal Majesty, Princess Juliana, summons her loyal subjects to court to celebrate her 1st birthday on July 30th ...". We were also thinking about hiring a clown but we would have her wear a hat that look like a court jester. We already have a chair that looks like a thrown.
How lame is this? Any other ideas for how we could make it a more original princess theme? I don't really want to do the Disney/Cinderalla princess decorations but I guess I'm not sure what else we would go with it.
Part of me wants to do a really original, really cool first birthday party. The other part of me says that she won't remember this so why put forth so much effort?

I think the princess theme sounds cute! You could have royal purple and gold or jewel tone colors and gold for the theme colors. You could get plastic goblets for ppl to drink out of. Princess crowns for party hats. You dont have to do Disney princess if you dont want to.

My honest opinion is that I would only do the theme IF you don't care about "re doing" the them later. In other words, when Juliana is 2 or 3 or 4 or 5, she might want to do a princess party and wear crowns and dresses and all that. And then you might be tempted to say "oh, we already did that one". So, while I LOVE the ideas, if it were me, I would go something else now and do BIG vintage princess in the future. (Also, I don't know about the clown...has Juliana seen one before? Does she like them? Again, I think maybe she would really enjoy that one in a few years...but maybe it would be a lot at this age??)

We did princess for Madelyns first bday. Traditional kind of princess though. Very pink and girly, but not Disney. Anyway, I don't regret it at all. She has had cute ideas for her other two birthdays and hasnt even mentioned princess. So at this point if she wanted to do it again, we've had enough time in between I would be willing to do it again. I LOVE the royal princess thing, and its original without being crazy. I'd skip the clown though, even if Julianna likes clowns its very hard to know if the other kids would like clowns.
