I'm slowly gathering bday gifts for Omair (still have a couple months to go for us, lol) and just HAD to get a cute little crayon roll-up pouch that Carrie made (sooooooo awesome, btw!). I want to make it one of Omair's gifts, but wonder if any of you have recommendations for crayons/coloring stuff appropriate for a 1 year old's birthday? He's kinda eating everything I hand him right now, but I would like to introduce that kind of thing for him. Also, he tends to tear normal paper pages as well, so a traditional style coloring book will have to wait awhile, too. Any good ideas out there that I can incorporate? Thanks!!!

What about something like the AquaDoodle?
Amazon.com: Aquadoodle Classic Mat: Toys & Games
It is a big plastic mat, and the "crayon" is a little device you fill with water. When you touch it to the mat, you can draw, but of course it doesn't matter if he accidentally uses it on the couch, carpet, walls, etc. It is really kid-proof...the worst thing that can happen is that they could get the "crayon" open and spill a couple of ounces of water. That way they can learn where it is appropriate to draw, and you can encourage his creative abilities without worrying about the impending disasters of traditional markers and crayons.
BTW, I have seen this cheaper at Walmart

OOooooOO thanks for posting this! We have one already and I never thought of letting Heidi try it but just a few mins ago she was coloring on her belly with a pen and of course I had to stop that right away. So, she's def interested in coloring but I too (like Miranda) was wondering how I was going to support her coloring desire.

Glad to help! My niece has one, and I hadn't really thought of getting one for Claire yet. I'm pretty sure I'll have to pick one up next time I go shopping

you can sit him at the table and tape down all 4 sides of a piece of paper. and there are these "crayon" type things for little kids/toddlers that are like a ball with a crayon tip. they are easier to hold and harder to eat. pretty sure Crayola makes them.

i think the aqua doodle would be great to use when they are getting close to 2 .. i dont know if they will really care that they are making lines and scribbles with it yet ... but they are fun to use and would be great to have .... I know wyatt just wants the remote .. or my coupons .. or the phone ... no matter what it does they just want the item .. might be the same with the aqua doodle at first

I was also going to suggest the Aquadoodle. It's a cloth mat and you colour with a water pen.
What I would not recommend is this: Crayola - Beginnings First Marks Markers - Crayola - Toys"R"Us
I got this for Isabelle when she was a baby and all she did was suck the paint out and turned out looking like this :

I was thinking of those exact things that Trish just posted, except instead of paint they are crayons.
