One of my friends just sent a mass message out with this:
Does anyone have a baby with eczema? What do you do for it? _____ has it so bad. She even had to go on a prescription but as soon as she was done with that, it came right back (and you can't use it very often). We have tried aveeno, aquafor, cetaphil, hydrocortizone 1% and nothing works. Thanks!
Sophie has never had that problem but I figured SOMEONE on here has or knows someone that has. She really has tried everything, the pedi also told them to only bathe the baby 2 times a week. I feel so bad for her

Well cadet has it and he has two prescriptions because over the counter doesn't help. He uses triamcinolone and we apply it 4 times daily. The other one contains steroid and you can't use daily . We also bathe him with cetaphil. Oatmeal baths are good too. All those things keeps his eczema under control for us.

Grace used to get it so bad she bleed. Thank God it looks as though she has outgrown it. Anyway, this is going to sound weird but I swear it was the only thing that really worked.
At night, right before bed, we would cover her in cetaphil than a thin layer of Crisco (yes the white baking grease), then we would put tight fitting long sleeve and pants PJ's on her. It would clear her skin up over night. The allergist said the Crisco seals in the cetaphil and helps it moisten the skin.

Dont know how old the child is but Kaitlyn has severe eczema and just last January she was dx with a milk allergy. We had to do an elimination diet, and now we have to watch how much milk products she gets, and is completely on soy or almond milk. If she drinks cow milk she breaks out and scratches so much she bleeds.
Before we found that out, nothing worked. Oat meal baths dries her out more, eucerine cream worked but I had to literally apply it about every 30 minutes all.day.long for relief.

CJ's butter has an eczema cream that I've heard a lot of people swear by. It may be worth a shot! We always used Cetaphil for Tyrael's eczema, but I know you said that didn't work. :-( Poor baby.

Cetaphil was helpful but, honestly, both my girls had terrible eczema and the only thing that seemed to help was detergent and bath soaps free of perfumes and dyes. Also, it was one of those things that only seemed to get better over time (i.e. they grew out of it). By the time they were 1, it was virtually gone.

I apologize in advance for butting in. I'm not a July 20101 mommy (my son was born in October 2010), but this post came up when I did a search on eczema. Feel free to ignore if I'm not welcome here.
How old is the baby? Has she had her tested for food allergies? My son, Moshie, has really bad eczema & we had also tried everything without success. It turned out that he has a severe milk protein allergy & a soy allergy. The 2 ointments that have worked for us are plain white petroleum & also Bag Balm. Bag Balm is amazing. My OB actually recommended it to me to apply to my c-section incision. The 10 oz. can is about 10$ & you can buy it at most drug stores (CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc.). It can be used for everything! Minor cuts & scrapes, minor burns, chapped skin & lips, diaper rash (although not with cloth diapers)...and eczema. You can even use it on pimples & sunburns. The 10 oz can will last forever! She only needs to apply a thin layer to where ever the baby's eczema is. She can also alternate using glycerin. You can buy pure glycerin at most drug stores. After a bath, just rub the baby down with it as she would with any other lotion or baby oil.
Also, what is she using to bathe the baby? We switched Moshie to California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash. And the Super Sensitive Everyday Lotion. They're a bit pricey (21$ for the Shampoo/Body Wash & 12$ for the lotion), but we noticed a difference almost immediately...totally worth the price. I am surprised that the pediatrician told her to only bathe the baby twice a week. That advice/treatment for eczema is rather antiquated. New research shows that daily bathing actually helps relieve eczema. Dr. Sears & most dermatologists recommend daily bathing in lukewarm water (some suggest adding a small amount of natural oil such as carrot seed oil or caledula oil to the water) b/c lukewarm baths allow water to soak into the skin. You might want to suggest this site to her. It has really good advice on how to handle baby & toddler eczema, plus several links to sites recommending daily bathing & why.

(It won't let me post the actual link)
Lastly, she might want to check out this website:
www(dot)ewg(dot)org/skindeep/
You can search 10s of 1000s of different cosmetic products & it gives you all of the info on that product regarding the ingredients & their safety & rates them on a scale of 0-10. I was extremely surprised to find out that MANY baby products (including Johnson & Johnson that is endorced by thousands of hospitals) have extremely high toxicity/unsafe ratings.
Sorry for babbling. I hope she finds something to relieve the baby's suffering soon. It's heartbreaking when your little one is in pain & you can't figure out how to fix it.

You are more then welcome here if your intentions are strictly for offering eczema advice. This playroom is a no drama zone.
Thank you

OK. Not sure what you mean. I was just offering advice based on what worked for us. I apologize if I stepped on any toes for posting here when my child was not born in July 2010. I won't post here again. It was not my intention to upset anyone. Best wishes & I hope the baby's mom is able to find something to soothe the baby soon.
