I had a WIC appt yesterday and the nutritionist asked me if I was still bfing and how many times. I told her yes and anywhere from 5-8 times in 24 hour period. I don't know if this is right or not, but she told me to not offer bfing first but to offer food first and not bf as much I'm a little confused, I mean Aidyen is a comfort nurser but babies still get alot of nutrition from bm after a year right??

Yes they still get total nutrition from bm! I still breastfeed Ty and he is actually still primarily breastfed as his food source. He doesnt have an interest at all in table food yet, despite our offerings, but he does still eat pureed baby food just fine and 3 meals a day. He also drinks water from a sippy cup but not much and still just wants to nurse...a lot. Ty is a huge comfort nurser and I am not sure how many times in 24 hours we nurse. He typically sleeps until 3:30am then wakes to nurse a little bit, then gets up around 5:30am and nurses quite a bit until we get out of bed. Then he comfort nurses and for his nap and nighttime also. It depends but I am guessing roughly he nurses 8-10+ times a day. Not always for a long time but still nursing. I have zero plans of stopping anytime soon.

Yes, they still get nutrition from breastmilk. They can nurse for a long time and gets lots of great nutrients that way. I have found at our WIC appointments, the nutritionists there seem to have a script and don't take anything else into consideration. Like, for instance, my son who gets WIC is failure to thrive. He's always been tiny and we've struggled like MADE to get him to gain weight. When I first got him and had to take him to the appointments they almost made me feel like it was my fault he wasn't gaining weight. I had to explain the situation every stinking time. Now I just tell them what I know they want to hear and go on with my life.

I was pretty shocked! She was going o and on and very insistent about not bfing as much. I just smiled and nodded and continue to nurse on demand

Yeah, I would ignore that LOL
Why don't you contact your local LLL chapter? They are so helpful! (Well, ours is at least!)

This is how our pediatrician is. They told me at 9month checkup that they like their mommies to start weaning at 1 yr, etc. The doctor asked if I was weaning at her 12 month appt, and I said she was nursing less now that she was eating more solids and left it at that.
We're still nursing on demand.

Why on earth would a pedi recommend moms to start weaning at a year? That's disturbing.
I just wanted to add that right now, Juliana is nursing way more than 5-8 times per day. She's going through a regressive stage where she just can't get enough milk, day or night. I'm not worried about it and I'm certainly not going to wean her any time soon.

Holly: Yes surely ignoring that lol! I never thought about contacting a LLL chapter, I'll look into that thanks for the suggestion
Mariah: Aidyen is doing that too....he nurses so much. At least 5-8 times during a 24 hr period and while it is tiring I'm in no hurry to stop, I mean they obviously need it if they are wanting to nurse that much right?
That's crazy why do people push for weaning a 1 year?? I wonder what the lady would say when I'm in there and still nursing at 2 or even 3 years

I think they have a one size fits all mentality, kind of like how it use to be a milestone to turn your baby around in the car seat at one year old. There is no medical reason why it would be beneficial for you to wean at one year....it's just what the norm is, I think, or it use to be. You just keep doing what you're doing! :-)
