I'm thinking of starting signing. I wonder if it might help with his communication and it would be nice if he could eventually tell me what he wants. I'm always wondering if he even understands anything we're saying - I really have no clue if he does. So I think if he could sign it might help me feel better. I tried before around 6 months but I was the only one doing it with him and I just didn't do it consistently and stopped. I still don't think DH would want to do it but if I could be patient and be consistent enough with the signs I wonder if it would help.
Anyway, if I started now, what signs do you think would be the most beneficial to teach and how many would you start with?

I think if your consistent enough it would be beneficial. I would start with basic ones like water/drink, tired, etc. We started around 9 months with Aidyen and we weren't consistent he knows how to sign milk and that's it. Also try the more and all done..I think those are the beginning ones

Just do like daily things....like when you're getting him dressed, changing a diaper, feeding him, etc.
please, more, and milk were the easiest to just do automatically for me.

We have the baby signing time video and its great (the only time she ever watches any tv...she must think that's the only show the strange black box plays lol)! I try to sign as much as I can on top of it, but of course, she picked up the animal signs. Very useful. lol. She does bird, fish (she says fish as well), and sometimes horse.
She does the more sign and tries to do all done, but I sometimes wonder if she really knows what that means. When she does "more", I sometimes think she is asking for something else to eat instead of more of the same, you know? I am pretty sure she uses all-done correctly, only her technique isn't the best.
So yeah, I say go for it! I actually recommend the video as well, I do think its helped her.

I also recommend the baby signing time videos. Check your library, mine has volumes 1 to 6. Grace even likes them! Caleb is learning super fast. We stick to the common ones, "more", "all done", "milk", "juice", "eat". He seems to be learning a new sign every other day.

We started around 9 months and I didn't think there was any way she was getting it, but around 11 months she started signing "milk", "all done" and "more". Now I kind of regret teaching her the milk sign because every time she sees me she makes the milk sign and I just want to hide from her sometimes! But I digress ....

I'm hoping by starting now he'll pick it up a lot quicker. He was doing milk the other day after I showed it to him but he was just copying me and doesn't really know what it means yet, I'm sure. I have a Baby Einstein My First Signs but I could never get him to watch it before so I wonder if he'd pay attention to it now. I really want to check out Baby Signing Time but the library has vol. 1 & 2 on order and that's it. I'm first on the list for #1 when it comes in!

Sign language is great. I did it with Leah and she still remembers all her signs. TJ is doing great and signs milk, water, more and Mama, but Ty is only signing milk. Just sign as you say it and they will eventually pick it up.
