I'm now worried that my son may be a bit behind....while reading the talking thread and seeing how many of your kids are saying all kinds of words, my son is still only saying momma, dadda, bobba (for bottle..) and thats pretty much it. He can wave Hi & Bye...and mumbles a lot.. Am I the only one? Is my kid behind?!

No, he's fine. Isaac doesn't say much either. He says mama, dada and that's about it. And he can sign milk, sleep, eat, and more. Don't worry, Bryce is fine.

Ahh, thanks for the reassurance. I called my husband today telling him we've got to get on this talking thing because we were behind. We read lots of books!

Thank you!

It's hard not to compare, especially when you are a part of a group like this. But, kids do things at their own pace.

definitely not behind! the only reason I was able to list anything at all was because I am with my son 24/7 so I know what he means. to everyone else, it's just babble.

Every child is different. My DD's talked early but DS didn't. We did all the same things with all three and got different results. I've read that the best thing you can do is to not talk baby-talk too too much and the reading to them helps.

Don't feel bad. I've had people give me a hard time bc all of my kids didn't/don't get ANY teeth what-so-ever until they are over one y/o. They act like my kids are deformed or need medical attention. Their teeth come in just as strong and normal as anyone else, they just take their time

I wouldn't worry either. My friends child is 2 years old and doesn't like to talk. She said her oldest boy did the same thing and when he turned 3 he all of a sudden started talking. I think it's like w/ those weight charts, it's just relative to other children what the norm should be.

Sophia doesn't say much either (mama, papa and then some alien language). I think it will come sooner than later try not to worry.

boys alot of times speak alot later and it is not unusual .. my oldest son had a vocab of 10+ words at a year old.. my second son 15 months younger had about 3words ...and no one else in the family understood him til 2 1/2 or 3

my friends from school there son didnt talk til 3 ... and my nephew was the same, only his mom could understand him until he was close to 3 ....

at 12 months they only want them to know 3 words.. usually they are mama dada and baba

I agree with Lori too ... most of us moms understand them and are around them no one else might understand them ... so does it count.. ??? haha

Miranda doesn't say anything legible yet really, just mama, dada, bye, and what sounds like Zelda (our cat's name). Other than that she's just doing the baby jbberish. Don't worry, he is fine!!!! Now if he's still not talking by the time he's 2, then I would get him checked.

Oh and I forgot to add that my DS didn't say much until he was 3ish...just mumbo jumbo that no one could understand. And now he WON'T STOP TALKING!!!!!!

I agree with everyone else- don't worry! My DD is barely saying Mama and Dada. I am not worried though- every child is different and I have really babied her- giving her what she wants when she points, whines or screams. I hadn't thought much about trying to teach her to use words, until the paperwork at her one year appt told me that I should not do that. Ooops.

Yup, ditto everyone else. It's soo hard not to compare the kids, especially even between your own, but every baby is different and going to do things on their own timeline. Paige isn't saying much either.

Dont worry...kids all work at diferent paces. Suzannah didnt crawl until 9mo! lol

Having done this a few times and almost all my kids were late talkers I just don't worry about it until 18 months. Natalie only has one real word - woo woo which she says for dog. She also babbles baba and mama and just started with dada, but I'm not convinced those ones are real words and not just babbling. Woo woo is the only thing that she seems to actually associate with anything. Of course she calls squirrels woo woos too. It's kind of funny.

Hallie doesn't really say anything much. She can only say a mama, dada, ki (kitty), and bye-bye. But she isn't consistent with it and I'm not sure she really associates it yet. She jabbers alllllllll the time though. We have been working to keep her away from her paci long enough to learn to talk and know that she is making noise. Don't worry!!

My son is about the same age as yours, and he says Dada & baba all the time, and I have only heard mama a few times. That's it though, no other words. And I really am not sure if he knows what these words mean or if it is just babble. So you have nothing to worry about, I think it is perfectly normal.

dont worry about it. after being around these boards for over 6years, i know its hard not to compare to the other kids. Julia isnt saying much either. As long as they are meeting other milestones and are healthy and happy it doesnt concern me.
