So I went and bought Aidyen a convertible car seat today...and I swear I don't understand how a car seat can be so difficult to install!! I read the directions and the stupid thing is really loose at the top... I don't know what to do??

You probably need to tether it, depending on what kind of vehicle you have and what kind of seat!
The Radian XTSL doesn't require a tether with the latch system, but the Britax we have does.

As long as the bottom part by the back of the seat doesn't move more than an inch it's fine. When I got mine checked they said the top part is going to move. I'm sure you've probably got in right. You can't use the top tethers on that seat when it's rear-facing.

Ok thank you everyone! So should I take it to the police station and have them check it to make sure I have everything else right?

Couldn't hurt! I think I should try to get mine checked every once in a while to make sure.

i hate how difficult carseats are to install. we have an older vehicle that does not have the latch system and it takes me about 30 minutes before i give up and holler at dh to come help me get it in tighter.

Yes, like Michele said, you don't check for movement at the top of the seat, only at the belt path. The top acts sort of like a shock absorber, as far as I understand.

I agree you should take it to get it double checked. As far as I know the only car seat that you can tether while rearfacing is the Britax. Our's in a Britax and is tethered in the RF position. BUT, I also wasn't sure so I took it to a local carseat inspection spot. Stacey and Michele are both right in that the top should move some to absorb the shock of an impact.
