I start back August 24th. I really still want my nursing degree, but no matter how I look at it until my kids are all in school I just can't afford the childcare to go to school. (I priced it. I'd have to pay for 4 kids for afterschool care $160 + Natalie's childcare. No way can I do it.) So anyway, I have a certificate as a medical assistant, but the school I went to before's accreditation sucked big time. That and I have been out of the workforce for over 12 years so I can't get certified even if there accreditation didn't suck without taking a refresher course which nobody offers. So I decided to go through Kaplan online for their associate degree program. I didn't have my associates just a certificate. I figure this way I'll have an associates degree at least instead of going to the same thing twice.
Since I am a veteran I get a really good discount for tuition and almost all the classes are online so I don't have to pay for childcare. They have an externship at the end to get the clinicals in. I'm not worried about that since I have worked as a phlebotomist and a medical assistant before. I also am having them audit my transcripts to see how many credits will apply towards their bachelors program. I have a ton of credits, just no degree. I have like 60 something credits from different schools from my various attempts at nursing school. I figure I'll just plug along at a general bachelors in health science and when the kids are all in school if I want to I can transfer to an accelerated second degree bsn program then. And if I don't then I still have a bachelors degree that should help just the same.
I'm nervous, but excited. Not sure if I'm more nervous about classes or more nervous about the idea of going back to work at some point in the not too distant future. I haven't worked outside the home like I said in 12 years. Scary stuff. Wish me luck!

Teresa Im sure you will do AWESOME!!! I am almost the exact same...I have 60 plus credits and didnt get a degree cause I wasnt sure what to do in the beginning. I want to go back to do the last 3 classes to get an associates in generals. I have everything done for nursing but I changed my mind and dont want to be a nurse anymore. I just want a degree in something so all those hours of schooling were for nothing.
Online classes are awesome for moms, saves ya money on daycare. Thats how I did all mine.
Hopefully the next little while will fly by for you and before you know it you are done.

Good for you, Teresa. You are such a smart, driven person, I know you will do great.
I have about 100 credits and am only about 5 classes away from my Bachelors (in psychology). Actually I have more than that but those are the only ones that can be applied toward my major, I also have a ton of Early Childhood Education credits. I really need to just finish it but as a Mom it is WAY easier said than done. I got into a decent school down here (we just moved) but all of the online classes I would need are full, so I am going to have to wait. There's just no way I can make it work, going to class and also working PT and being a Mom. Anyway, kudos to you. Education is important and empowering!
