Juliana had an ear infection and then was teething, so I've been giving her Infant Advil every night for about 6 weeks. A couple times I tried not giving it to her and she didn't sleep as well. Is it bad to give it to her for so long? Would it be better if I switch to Tylenol? I like Advil better because it lasts 6 hours. On really bad nights, I'd give Tylenol after the Advil wore off but now we're just on Advil.

Yes, I give her Advil once per night. For about a week I also gave Tylenol once per night in addition.

you've given it to her every night for 6 weeks? That seems awfully long to me -- I know advil can be hard on the tummy. I don't think I've given advil or tylenol to Sydney for more than 2 or 3 nights in a row (that's during sick times). Have you tried any of the natural stuff for the teething pain (like Hylands)?

Yep. It doesn't seem to help. She has a very low pain tolerance.

I think maybe you should call your pedi. Do you have a nurse line so you could talk to someone without having to make an appointment? Personally, I wouldn't give advil or tylenol repeatedly like that. But I don't know enough to know how hard it is on the system(also, we have to use a medication for Olivia that would make ssome people freak out if they knew I gave it to her, so I don't want you to think I'm judging you). I think that your pedi could possibly have another option that might work thats non-medicated. What all have you tried for 'natural' options?

Ugh, I wish I could come in with a great answer, but my best advice is to call the pedi. Mariah, I totally know where you are coming from, I've given Arie many many days worth of medication at night... but 6 weeks seems like a very long time. I THINK its fine but not ideal, if that makes any sense. But a pedi would know much better.

Seems like to long to me to give it to her for that long. I wouldnt do it with out my pedi's ok. Once or twice a week yes, but not every night for that long.

I also agree. I think 6 weeks is a bit long - especially if it's persistently every night. There may be something else going on. Like maybe the ear infection is back? Or now it's something else, but at least the pedi can give you better guidance.
I'm sure it hasn't damaged her or anything. I think you'd really have to keep it up for a long while for that to happen, but, she should be starting to feel better somehow.
If you're sure it's teething, then why not try some orajel instead? See if it helps. At least if it does then you've ruled out the other stuff, and you can go back to frozen peach slices or something to help her out.

I tried no meds at all last night (including Hylands, which I couldn't find last night of all nights) and she was back to waking every 1.5-2 hours. I guess I'll just deal with that for a few more nights and see if it improves. The only natural remedy I've tried is Hyland's and I don't seem to get much out of it. Orajel never seemed to work either. Juliana hates stuff going in her mouth so by the time I get to the affect tooth it's all over her lips, tongue, and everywhere else. I'm not sure if I want to go the frozen peach route in the middle of the night because frozen stuff might wake her up more. She nurses back to sleep quickly but when she wakes up, she fusses so I can tell she's uncomfortable.

I was at the pedi 3 weeks ago and told her then that I'd given Juliana Advil almost every day for 3 weeks and she didn't say anything. But maybe 3 weeks is different than 6.

As for your question if you should switch to tylenol, I say no because tylenol is much much harder on the liver then advil is but I'd still not do advil this long but I just read online that long term use of advil can cause

I found a few others but they were all opinion based but here is what Dr. Sears says

If given at the proper doses, it is safe to use "around the clock" for several days.

Ibuprofen | Dr. Sears Official Website | Parenting Advice, Parenting Books & more
Most of all the sites say not to use it for more then 1 week with out a physicians guidance because long term use can hurt the stomach and the lining.
Hope she starts feeling betters soon. I'd probably have her ear looked at again just to make sure the infection isnt back.

Thanks, Shannon. Even though she woke up a lot last night I still feel like I got plenty of sleep, oddly. I think we'll just go cold turkey on Advil and see how the next week or so goes. her tooth did break through a few days ago so we should be getting better any day.

I don't think it's ideal that she's been getting advil for 6 weeks, but it makes it better that you're only giving it to her once a day. Like the other girls have said, I'd call your pedi to see if they have any advice that google doesn't have, lol. Hope there's something out there that can given Juliana some relief
I'll be perfectly honest...if I even think Leah's the least bit uncomfortable or fussy...I'm quick to medicate her. I don't like for my baby to be in any amount of pain. So I understand that you're doing what you can for your baby. I hope you can get some sleep soon.

Same here. If i have no idea what is wrong and she's screaming and crying, I will try advil or tylenol....I don't know if that's the problem but if I can't think of anything else, I would hate to think she's in a lot of teeting pain, or had a headache or a sore throat or whatever.

Last night was just awful. She's been drooling and chewing on her finger so I knew she was teething. I couldn't find my Hyland's again so I had nothing to offer her. She was whimpering in her sleep when she did sleep, and waking up frequently. Since I wasn't giving her pain meds I just let her nurse for comfort as long as she wanted, which was a long time. I didn't get much sleep. I think I'll have to cave and give the Advil tonight if it looks to be as bad as last night. I may actually run out after work tonight and see if I can find more Hyland's, but I think they may still be in and out of stock at most places.

Mariah if she needs pain meds every night for now, I would maybe switch it to tylenol every second night or something. Like 2 nights motrin, 1 night tylenol, etc.
I feel you on the teething pain, Arie is cutting 3 teeth right now and barely napped yesterday (a half hour total instead of her usual 3 hours total) and it took me a good hour to get her down today, and that was WITH tylenol. At least I'm HOPING its teething pain and not just her deciding she doesn't want to sleep.

Same, and when Sophie's tooth actually cuts through, she runs a fever for a good 3-4 days....at first I thought this was weird and ended up going to the pedi. So I HAVE to give her Ibuprofin and Tylenol staggered because her fever gets so high. So after the fever stops, I still give her 1 dose at night for a day or two as a precaution becaus it scares me.
Like last time I think it got up to 102.3
