I live in coastal Connecticut and they're talking of it making landfall here Sunday as a Cat 1. We aren't planning to evacuate but we are preparing just in case we loose power. I hope everyone else stays safe.

Not us, but our whole family is back on the east coast right in the path. I think my gran is going to go over to my mom's so that she's somewhere safe and everything. My renters don't have cable right now since the quake knocked it out, so they had no clue this was coming. They do now and should be prepared soon, I hope.

It's funny (for lack of a better word) how East Coast hurricanes basically "skirt" the coastline but people still evacuate. I mean I'm not saying not to, but it's just different than how we would get with them in Southeast Texas. Rita (2005), Humberto (2007), and Ike (2008) --- we get hit RIGHT on, but I guess it's just as bad having a hurricane go all the way down the coast doing damage, I mean once the hurricane hits us it starts dying really fast.
Oh and then they would have to evacuate to the West, where we always evacuate to the North.
I am sucked into the coverage though :X
I do worry about the impact it will have on me flying home on Sunday. I'm sure a lot of flights will be cancelled, rerouted, postponed...Houston is a big airport (and Continental hub) so I bet it's going to be pretty busy.

Yeah, we'll probably get a good amount of rain & wind. Hopefully not too bad; this area doesn't get too many, so its not really prepared for it. We got hit by Isabella in 2003 (I think she came ashore in VA Beach) & areas about 40 miles South of DC were without power for like 3 weeks. DC is built on swampland, so it floods really badly when we get a lot of rain. All the Metro tunnels flood & half the streets. A rising Potomac takes out parts of downtown & Old Town Alexandria. Anyway... I'm hoping Irene turns out to be much ado about nothing.

so Isabella was in 2003. Dh and I were talking about it today. I was living in MD at the time and that was crazy! we had crazy wind and `rain and the power went out. I was living with my parents at the time so I wasnt so scared. lol.
today in FL has been so cloudy and very windy. I love it. it was raining hard this morning too. But it has calmed down. I wanted to go to the beach and watch the waves, but desi is sick.

We are in its path here in Baltimore. They're saying something like 4 inches of rain and sustained winds between 35-75 mph so we are prepared to lose power for a few days.

I"m in FL and looks like most of it is going to miss us. I don't wish this monster on anyone! (Although I WOULD take a little wind and rain to cool things off here!).

Yeah, I'm in Dallas, so we're getting nothin'. As terrible as it may sound, the drought here this summer has made me WISH for a decent hurricane to come into the Gulf and shoot some good rain up our way. I just don't want any death and destruction to come of it. Can we pick and choose like that?? lol

I have an aunt and uncle, another aunt, and 2 cousins and their wives that live in coastal NC (near Elizabeth City) or Virginia Beach. I have an aunt who lives in Baltimore and some more of my mom's extended family lives in MD/DE area. I think my aunt and uncle may have evacuated somewhere more inland but I'm not sure.
I hope Mandy, Lori, Heather, and Lisa and everyone's families who live there are prepared and staying safe!
Oh! I almost forgot I have a good friend who lives in Poughkeepsie NY too. I should try to call her today and see how she's doing.

Shamile ... I lived in MD in 2003 when Isabel hit too! I was teaching in Randallstown. We were out of school for almost 2 weeks because of flooding.
Thanks Michele
Being in PA we are a little further west of the water so all we should get is some flooding (a lot of flat farm land here) and power outages. I'm worried for my BFF who's family owns a condo in OC Maryland. We've gone to that Condo every summer since I was 12..hope it holds up to the wind. Also worried about my family in Dundulk and Middle River, MD. They live right on the water. In 2003 Isabel did a heck of a lot of damage to that area. I know Lori is in East B-More too. Stay safe everyone.
Holly...As you know I was in Galveston when tropical storm Gustav came through in 2008. That was bad enough..ripped the bark right off the palm trees. One week later Ike came through. Had Gustav not cut our vacation short we would have been there for Ike. I think storms in the Gulf are worst because the water is warmer.. Although a hurricane up the east coast is no little thing either...Hurricane Gloria took half our roof off in 1985, Isabel knocked out power for weeks and distroyed homes all up the east coast.
This is what Downtown Baltimore City looked like after Isabel. I did some more research..I think Isabel was a cat 2 storm...same as this one is projected to be.

That's so crazy! Hurricane Gustav is actually the reason why people didn't evacuate for Ike. Gustav actually did not hit Southeast Texas (It went in at the central coast of Louisiana - Hurricane Gustav - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) but the outer bands had a lot of storm. For some reason all the Southeast Texas counties jumped the gun and ordered a mandatory evacuation for Gustav like FOUR days early....so people left, etc.
So Ike they made the mistake of literally waiting until the last minute....like we booked our hotel room in Grapevine (Town with an awesome mall North of Dallas, lololol) before they even called for an evacuation.
Humberto is the one that shocked us all, it formed and hit within like 18 hours. They thought it was just a stupid depression and beefed up super fast...it was only like 180 miles off the coast when it formed! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Humberto_(2007)
The funny thing about Humberto was that I called my parents at like midnight (I mean when they went to bed at like 9:30 it was still supposedly just a depression) and was all like "OMG WAKE UP THERES A HURRICANE" lol
