So I have a massive fear of choking when it comes to babies........
My Mom called me at work this past Friday and began with "everything is ok, but that there was an emergency just a few minutes before". I could hear Hunter still crying in the background. My mom was out of the room, and my almost 3yr old DD, started yelling "Nana Hunter choking". My mom ran in to see Hunter standing up holding onto the couch with his back arched and chin up in the air trying to breath, with no sound. She grabbed him and whipped him upsidown. Nothing moved so she reached in and could feel just the tip of something. That is when she cranked his mouth open (face colour changing) and managed to get a hold of the object and pull it free. Out came a puzzle piece and up came (TMI) a ton of vomit. He began breathing and screaming. There was a little blood in the vomit. Apparently he put a small puzzle piece in his mouth, and it ended up going too far and lodging in the back of his throat/mouth.
My Mom was very rattled when she was telling me over the phone. I am so glad she was there. When I got home from work she let herself just break down and just couldn't stop crying with all the "what ifs" and saying she was just about to go upstairs and look for nailpolish for the kids when my DD began yelling. She was worried I wouldn't think she was doing a good job etc. She was SOOO wrong. I was blessed that she was there, and that my daughter knows enough to tell us when Hunter puts things in his mouth. How London recognized that he was choking, I'll never know. We were blessed with devine intervention that day! He wouldn't stop clinging to my Mom for the rest of the day, and i can't say I blame him. I was going to go home, but she assured me all was ok.
Just so you know, the puzzle was a fridge magnet puzzle that he never ever put in his mouth before, and it didn't even appear to be a size that he would fit in there. I really thought the puzzle was ok. Needless to say it's been put away for a long time, and that's if I can even bring myself to keep it. My daughter loves it so I can show her we still have it when she asks, but as soon as she stops asking. It's getting tossed.
My fear continues.....

OMG Tarrah. That is a big fear of mine as well, as I'm sure it's a fear we all have. How smart of London!! Wowzers is all I have to say.
Was it one of those Vtech fridge puzzles? (I have the animal one). I'm now thinking maybe I should put it away.

Wow - So scary. One of my biggest fears too. It took me a long time to let Maggie eat anything whole. We had a couple close calls, but got over them quickly enough.
I'm wondering what puzzle it is too now. We have the leapfrog magnet puzzle on our fridge - but those pieces are big and chunky...way to big for her to swallow even if she could get them in her mouth. But I guess you never really know either.
Very glad he's ok. Big hug momma. You'll survive this.

Huge fear of mine too! I'm sorry this happened, but thank you for posting about it and reminding us to keep our guard up!
On a side note, I've heard if it fits in a toilet paper tube then it's a hazard.

One of my worst fears too thats why I still wont give hot dogs or peanut butter, or anything else on "the choking list".
Glad he is ok. Which magnet puzzle set is it? We have the magnet letters on the refrigerator but she never plays with them but my mom has that farm puzzle set on her's.

Oh my goodness. How scary and fortunate your mom was able to responds so quickly and get it out!!
We actually had a choking incident just yesterday (or was it the day before) and it was totally my fault. I gave him a single cheez-it and figured he could probably mash it up well enough even though he doesn't even have one whole tooth yet. Stupid me. Of course he started choking on it. We've had close calls before but this was the worst. I ended up just taking him out of his seat and hitting him on the back and he eventually gagged it up and I guess finished chewing it since it never actually came out of his mouth. I'm definitely going to try to be more careful, and more vigilant. It's the non-food choking that scares me the worst because generally when they're eating you know what's going in their mouth, unlike when they find a small random object on the floor or something, or like what happened with Hunter.

OMG that's so scary!! So glad he's okay!! Reading this makes my guard go way up! I feel like I need to get on my hands & knees tomorrow and make sure there's nothing laying around that I might be missing. My daughter has so many tiny little toys, I feel like I'm constantly reminding her not to leave them around for this reason.

So scary! This is a great reminder to go take an infant CPR class if you haven't! They cover all the choking stuff and some basic first aid. Your mom saved the day!

Thanks Ladies.
The puzzle was just a regular 24 piece princess puzzle from Walmart. It is just slightly smaller pieces than a standard size. I guess being wonky shapes makes it easier to twist around and slide down the throat a little. The funny thing is I got rid of the alphabet magnets long ago b/c some of the letters are too unsafely shaped and fit right inside a child's mouth, but hard to remove. It's a reminder for me to keep checking and rechecking all our toys for removable pieces etc.
