Do you have a toy\play room setup for your LO? Do you put all the toys in there, or do you remove some and alternate so they play with different things every day? Since my LO got a bunch of new toys for his bday, his play room is cluttered and I am finding that he doesn't want to spend as much time in there as he used to, so I wonder if it's too overwhelming.

We do have a play room but Bishop is still too small to go down there without supervision. We live in a tri-level house and it's the basement part.

But we have a bunch of toys for him in our living room. With my older boys who accumulated all these toys, we rotated. I still do with Bishop. So we have certain toys out right now, in a month, they'll get put away for awhile and new toys will come out.

Brendan has a basket with toys in it in our living room. That's the only room we can gate off so by default is has become his play room. In his bedroom he has a toy rack with baskets. I alternate toys between the two rooms so that he always has something "new" to play with. I've definitely noticed he gets bored with stuff but if I put it away and bring it back in a few weeks it's like gold again .

I just read an awesome book called Simplicity Parenting that talked about this. When there are too many toys to choose from, your child does get overwhelmed and instead of being able to choose a toy and engage in deep play, they don't want any of the toys. I highly recommend this book. It suggests keeping some of the toys in storage to switch out with later and just keeping the favorite toys and the toys that really inspire imaginative play out. It suggests keeping a handful of toys out in view and the rest in a covered toy bin.

Thanks for the advice! I am going to check out this book. You are right, he doesn't focus on any one toy for more than 30 seconds so I think it is too much for him.

Heidi shares a room with both her siblings in their separate rooms.. confused?

Ok so DD1's room contains Heidi's dresser and accessories.

DS's room contains Heidi's changing table and the bottom shelf of the table has Heidi's toys. That-a-way DD1 isn't bombarded with baby toys strewn about her room. Also, there was no room in her room for the changing table.

In a couple of yrs, Heidi will completely transfer to DD1's room. (Girls room)

Toys are always all over the floor in most rooms of the house..

hmm.. I think that's a good idea! I think I'll be removing some toys today and alternate.

I have a toy basket in the living room. The living room is baby safe and gated off. I also have a soft blanket on the floor so she can roll around on it. I take some of the toys and put them away (out of sight) and rotate them back in a month or so. She gets overwhelmed. I also get toys from our library that I will rotate in for a change.

She has toys in her room that we play w/ when she gets up or just before bedtime. I like to keep them in her room, but somehow a toy usually finds its way into the living room.

We don't have a lot of toys (compared to friends houses) but compared to what I I had when I was a kid, Sophia has a LOT of toys.

Thanks for the "Simplicity" article. I agree. I think I should scale down the toys even more.

Great post by the way!

We have adjoined rooms so we keep her toys in a box in her room and we put them inside the playpen that she no longer uses in our room until we can get a more organized shelf for her toys
