mostly just mama. He also says Miah in his own way but it's mostly just sounds and of course I worry because ds 1 had a speech delay but at the same time I keep reminding myself to wait it out a while longer because sometimes it just takes longer for some kids.

Kaiden doesn't really say any clear words...He makes the dada mama sounds but doesn't relate them to us. He says "num num" that I believe means yummy and he says EIEIEI as in from Old McDonald....not sure what happened to the O's tho

Maggie was an early talker. Her latest words are puppy, quack quack quack, duck, bear and how are you. What's this and who's that are still favourites too. I actually have lost count of her words. But she knows her own name and mommy and daddy too. Her comprehension skills are quite good too. She is quite clear when she speaks.
She was a lot slower than many with rolling, crawling and walking.

At our 15 month appt, the doctor's assessment sheet listed "Says 3-5 words", so I think Emily falls right in the "normal" curve.
Ours is saying Mommy, Dadda, Mah-mah (grandma), uh-oh, and Haiyah! (karate shout)

I've heard that babies' development can come in leaps and then plateaus, and that definitely seems to be the case with Juliana. At 9 months old, I took her to EI because she wasn't babbling yet. A week later, she was babbling like crazy and started to say words shortly after. By about 12 months, she was saying about a dozen "b" words including 2 syllables (bubbles and baby, for example). She had gotten to about 25 words. A lot of them would have been indistinguishable to most people (bird, bear, and ball all sounded about the same but I could tell them apart).
She has not learned a new word since her first birthday. In fact, she used to say "da da" and "dog" but hasn't for a long time. It seems like she's lost "D" from her vocabulary. She's learned tons of new signs. She used to actually know more words than signs, and now she knows about the same # of each or maybe a few more signs.
Are any of the other babies doing this?

Honestly, I have lost track of the words Maggie knows, but I did feel the same sort of peaks and valleys that you are describing. It's like they find they know this well enough and they move on to something else for a while. With Maggie I definitely see that there is a correlation between her gross and fine motor skills development, comprehension and vocabulary happening in separate phases. But to the naked eye, I don't think people would perceive the same stages. She is working with an advanced vocabulary, so it always seems like she is still perfecting the words while she has moved on to the other stuff.
And signing is definitely vocabulary PLUS fine motor skills!
