My LO has an ear infection on 1 side, and fluid on the other side. He was on Amoxicillan (antibiotic) for 10 days and I knew something wasn't right because he was so clingy and crabby when he should have been feeling better. I called the dr. last Friday and the nurse said it sounds like teething and to just wait out the full 10 days of antibiotic. So I did and we went back for a followup this week and he STILL has an ear infection. Now they prescribed a stronger antibiotic, so Im dealing with this for another 10 days.

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't understand why an antibiotic just wouldn't work. This is the first time he has ever taken antibiotics.

Tommy has had only one ear infection when he was a few months, so 8 don't haave much experience with it. I know there are a few mammas on the board that had ear issues maybe they will be able to offer some advice...I hope he is feeling better soon!

amoxicillan doesn't work for Liam either
He's had a fever this past week and took him to the dr and she said she didnt like the look of his one ear (even tho hes had tubes) so she gave him amox - and i said that it generally doesn't work for him and shes like its not bad so it should work fine
i hope shes right
but it seems accurate that he would need something else to knock that ear infection out as we've had to go back before to get something else

We don't have much experience here with Ear Infections. But my Sister does with her 2 boys. With her youngest they found out one medication didn't work for him and the next one he was allergic to. Some medications don't work for everyone. It happens. But I hope your LO gets over it soon and starts to feel better.

I think it just depends on how their bodies react with the medication. The same meds don't always work for everyone.

That has happened to Holden a couple times, I think it depends on what type of bacteria is causing the infection and what type of antibiotic they put him on.

Alison has had 6 ear infections now and they have pretty much used a different antibiotic every time because they are worried if they use the same one too often the infection will become resistant. My ped always has us come in for a follow up. We had to do two rounds of antibiotics one time. I hope he feels better soon, ear infections stink.

Thanks for the advice. Do you remember if your LO's felt better quickly after taking the antibiotics? Any time I have taken antibiotics I have felt better after 24 hours, but maybe that is not the case with baby ear infections. I think he is feeling a little better now, hopefully it gets cleared up this time.

With my boys, it usually took about 2-3 days before they were back to themselves. I haven't had an ear infection in my adult life so I'm not sure how quickly I'd bounce back.
