Saturday, DH and I are going to a Harry Potter-themed Halloween party at a friend's house. Dressy up with a Harry Potter theme is optional. DH and I have never seen the movie. We don't want to go all out because we'll only be able to stay a couple of hours. Can anyone recommend a simple costume for both of us that won't take much prep time? Thanks!

Well, if you don't want to do anyone too specific, you can just go as wizards...you know, typical Merlin-clothes types of wizards. Or you could dress like normal and go as "Muggles" (non-magic people) haha.

Love it! Do these Muggles wear any special make-up or dress a certain way or do they look just like regular people? I want to at least do something small like face paint or wear some different clothes so I'm not a total party pooper.

They all wear wizarding robes that look like graduation gowns in black.
You could get a couple branches from the backyard to use as wands...Muggles are plain clothed every day human beings. Nothing different about them and nothing you could do to look any different than you are - but you would definitely pass as muggles for the devout Harry Potter fanatic.
MudBloods are half wizard and half muggle borns. Any student at the school (incl. mudbloods) wears the robes...just a plain witches or vampire costume would probably do perfectly well and would pass with the hat and broom as a professor of the school, or with the cape alone as any student. Everyone carries a wand though.
I think you must be the only two people on the planet under the age of 50 who haven't seen any of the movies. I think the geek in you might honestly enjoy them if you ever got the chance! I actually resisted the first couple - but then caved and found myself having to catch up. If it weren't for the predictability of the very end of the very last one, they were very entertaining.

They just look like regular people lol. Ok, for some reason when I try posting pics it doesn't work...I would just google the Weasleys, Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, the Dursleys (these are the only muggles out of everyone I listed btw, most of the wizards dress like muggles in the movie anyway lol)...if you need more characters let me know lol
Oh, and there's a war that goes on in the last book so you can just be normal people with violent injuries or something

You would think so but I actually tried watching one on a plane once and had to turn it off because I was just not into it. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but the geek in me is more into sci-fi stuff that has an incredibly slim but actual chance of happening (think Terminator series) as opposed to magic (e.g., Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings).

I really enjoy the movies but I think the books are way better... the fifth book (Order of the Phoenix) is one of my favorite all-time books actually.

Ok, I looked at the characters and here is what I'm thinking. Maybe I could be Fleur Delacour. She's tall with blond hair and blue eyes so that would not be too much of a stretch.
Fleur Delacour - Harry Potter Wiki
DH could be her husband, Bill Wesley. He could use makeup to paint on the scars.
William Weasley - Harry Potter Wiki
My question for the Harry Potter experts is, what clothes should we wear that would give away that we are these characters? In the wiki I see them in lots of different outfits. I love Fleur's wedding dress but I don't have anything like that and don't really want to go out and buy one just for the party.

We love those ones too...but I found the HP series satisfied my fantasy theatre geek side too.
Have fun with your costume though. Enjoy it. It's been so long since I dressed up for halloween. Would love it if our friends got together for a good costume party!
