Ouch, poor Claire! Kinley also has rarely had diaper rash, but recently had a pretty stubborn one. I think it is because I made the mistake of using wipes that were not sensitive and had a scent. It took a couple of days of what Trish said, washing her with soap and water after every change and it finally went away. I hope this clears up soon!

I feel so badly for Claire...she has a terrible diaper rash. This is really her first one (I know that sounds crazy, but she is the healthiest, easiest baby EVER.) and I have no idea what to do to help her. It is actually bleeding in a few places. What do I do? Can anyone suggest ways to clear this up or products to use?

FWIW, we use Huggies Pure and Natural diapers. I have been putting Aquaphor on it, but maybe I need something medicated?

I use tons and tons of Desitin cream on the bum. That usually makes it better. But if you don't see any improvement within a day or two, I would take her in to be seen. Sometimes they have to give you a prescription cream. I can't remember what the dr. gave me but it had some cortisone and a yeast infection cream mixed together. I think you could also try a yeast infection cream that you can get over the counter. That could help.
Of course keep the bum area as clean and dry as possible. Wash her bum with soap and water after each diaper change and then after putting on the cream put some baby powder on as well (that's what the pharmacist told me to do once).

Did she eat something acidic? Miranda gets those when she eats something with tomatoes...like spaghetti sauce or lasagna. It gets really bad and she screams when I put her in the bath.
Hope Claire feels better soon!!!!

Thank you so much for the advice! I did find a tube of Boudreaux's Butt Paste, which has the same active ingredient as Desitin, so I slathered her with that and the powder before I put her down for her nap. I hope it works...we'll do the soap and water wash, too...that sounds like a great plan.

I didn't put two and two together until you mentioned the acidity, but DH fed her some of his Spanish Rice the other night...it had Rotel and tomato sauce in it. I told him not to, but he ignored me because she really liked it and kept saying "pease Dada." I guess when he gets home and sees her bum he'll learn his lesson!

ah...daddy will feel bad. I gave Miranda lasagna once and she loved it and kept eating it and the next day had the worst rash ever. so now I try to stay away from tomatoes.
Hope it clears up soon!!! I'm sure it will look much better in the morning.

Ive had a hell of a time with rashes with Omair. The only cream that I've liked is Desitin Original. For some reason, every single cream is "newly reformulated!" to be creamy, not a sticky paste. Which, it needs to STICK to the skin not slide right off for it to work! It does make it harder to clean the poo off, but the important key (from what a nurse told me) is to always make sure the cream stays on...dont wipe it all off each time because you're wiping off the brand new skin that's forming with it.

So, I use desitin ORIGINIAL! And only blot with the wipe, not actually swiping it, then reapply another layer on top of the already exisiting older layer.

When Omair had sores and would bleed when he was younger I found nothing to work, no cream, nothing. Until I went to Pakistan and dh's mother rubbed olive oil on his butt, then rubbed in dry henna powder. And OMG...within an hour the open sores crusted over and the next day he was healed. Im a firm believer in dry henna powder now. I also told some other friends and it worked for them as well!!!

Well, when Claire woke up this morning and I changed her, the rash looked MUCH better! There was no bleeding, and a lot of the redness was gone. I bet by the end of the day her bum will look brand new!

Thank you so much for all the advice ladies! Claire and her little bum appreciate it

That is very interesting. Thanks for the tip. I will have to try it out. (hopefully I won't need to, but never know)

When Hallie has had rash I let her go diaper free for a while during the day. Pee/poo will clean up if an accident happens. But I couldn't imagine the pain of having something against me like that if I was rashed. Letting her bottom dry out will be best if you can and change diapers as soon as they are soiled. I've also used refrigerated cornstarch. I hope her bottom gets better!!

In case you need it in the future you can do a homemade wipe solution that can work wonders. Mix a squirt of baby soap, a squirt of baby oil, and a tablespoon of baking soda into about 2 cups of warm water. Then you can either use cloth wipes, baby wash cloths, or even just paper towels with that solution on them. The soap helps clean, the oil moisturizes, and the soda leaves a barely there residue on the skin that helps protect against acidity. Then use your ointment as usual. We use CJ's BUTTer or for really bad rashes we break out the Aquaphor.
