walk up steps? How do you teach them to walk down them?

Tommy has been climbing them but it makes me nervous that he doesn't know how to get down. I really don't know how to teach him to come down except holding his hand but he never steps down so he kind of falls.

My LO still crawls up the stairs, but if I hold his hands and guide him he will try to walk up the steps. He has no idea how to get down, he would just try to dive if he had the chance. I have a friend who's sitter taught her kids how to slide down the stairs while laying in the their stomachs as a safe way of getting down the stairs. I have been thinking about trying that.

Rosie goes up the steps. But coming down we are working on. She gets the concept of sitting on her butt and going down but that lasts like 2 or 3 steps then she tries to walk bend down like she does when she is going outside.
But she is weird. When she goes out the back door she bends down and is all careful. Goes out the front and she just walks on out and doesn't pay attention..lol

And I am nervous about her coming down as we already had an accident. I am just glad it was 3 steps and not more. But the other day she was upstairs with my mom and decided she wanted to come down. Well she made it almost all the way down and I was feeding Joshua and all of a sudden I heard her come sliding/tumbling down.

Bishop can go up them and go down. He figured out how to climb back down on his own. We have 5 steps that lead to our bedroom (the lowest level in our tri-level house) and he would crawl up and then came back down all on his own.

We have a gate so I restrict Miranda from going to the stairs. But whenever she gets a chance she runs to them so fast and she crawls up like a champ. It makes me nervous to see that though and I always make sure I"m walking behind her. The other day Isabelle left the gate open (on purpose) and watched her go up all the way. We didn't even know until she was all the way on the 2nd floor already. Freaked me right out. We have not practiced going down yet. I'll wait until she's a bit older and am more comfortable letting her go up and down. Right now there is no reason to do it.

Our stairs are gated, too. She can crawl up them in a heartbeat, and I have tried to teach her to go down them the same way, but she doesn't really get it yet.

we have a step down to a landing and then two more steps into our living room from out kitchen
liam has figured out how to use the door jam to step down the one step but the two steps dont really have anything he can hold on to, so its been a struggle
if he crawls up them he can reverse and crawl back down but he wont do from the top of the stairs

Hunter crawls up. and does kind of a "butt slide" down. Lol I still have to watch him on the way down, though.

S can climb up and down we don't have stairs, but my mil and my dad have them, he figured out how to climb up and down right around the time he was crawling at 7/8 months I still stay right with him and if I had my way they'd be blocked off lol but not my house and we aren't there for long so I don't worry too much...going down he turns facing the steps and holds on and walks himself down
