My house is haunted - not by someone who lived here, and not by someone I know, but I know who my ghost is b/c I'm a geek and I did a lot of research last spring through town archives & asking the old folks in town about my neighborhood back in the day.
The house next door was a hospital during the first part of the 20th Century, and the doctor lived a few houses down. It was basically just a general practice, but he also delivered most of the babies born at that time - including my grandfather. The doctor's name was Frank Ellis, and even though he died in 1950 I'm 100% certain that his spirit visits my house.
Anyway, things have happened since I bought the place in 2004 when I was pregnant with my oldest child. Knocking, the smell of cigar smoke at random times, the sound of a man whistling when I was home alone. Dr. Ellis comes and goes as he pleases, but he always comes back around during a pregnancy & acts up a lot throughout the first year of each baby's life. The most eventful year was this last year with Miles. Our ghost would turn things off and on, knock things over, touch your back/arm, sit down on the edge of the bed, etc. I'm not crazy and it wasn't a coincidence.
I honestly believe we had more than one spirit in the house at one time b/c Frank is not mean even though he scares the crap out of me, I feel like he's just here to look over us. The other ghost was mean though - and I think it purposely targeted the kids. They'd wake up at night screaming like they'd been attacked and saying they saw things in their room. At one point I was making them all sleep with Chris & I, like we could protect them from some unknown monster. The final straw was when I started seeing this small dark shadow (not really a shadow, because you couldn't see through it and could see it like a form right in front of you but couldn't make out the features) move between the bedrooms and dart right across the living room. I started saying every prayer you could think of and the bad things stopped happening.
Anyway, our doctor ghost still comes around occasionally and it still scares me, but to be honest, I kind of feel safer when I know he's watching over us! His little sign that he's here is that he knocks the sugar shaker over when nobody's in the kitchen!
