Safeway should be ashamed of themselves!

That is ridiculous over $5. It definitely could've been handled better.

I read this story off of Yahoo's page. This grocery store took this incident to an extreme. What are your thoughts?

I have serious mixed feelings. First yes they over reacted however it was the cops who kept the parents from the child when they could have let them go a lot sooner or only arrested 1 parent.

Also this is why people should be paying for food before eating it. I hate seeing people walk through the store snacking on stuff and hadn't paid for it yet. So many people put the stuff back and never pay for it.

But I do agree the manager could have just accepted the money and been done with it just as the cops could have said next time pay before you eat type thing. So it was a failure on all parties.

Wow! That's all I can say. All for a stupid sandwich.
And considering that they were paying for their groceries, it's not like they had planned to steal the sandwiches. I think there was something similar at a Walmart a while back where an employee thought someone was kidnapping a child and tried to rip the baby out of the mother's arms. I can't even imagine what they went through.

I think it is ridiculous that Safeway wouldn't let them pay and pushed it to the point that the child was taken away for a night. Totally ridiculous. But I personally wouldn't have felt comfortable eating a sandwich without paying first. Pay, then eat while you shop.

i bet the crooks use the excuse i forgot to pay... makes it hard for stores to figure out who it was an accident and who isnt... but a kid being taken in to state custody so extreme i would be beyond livid

if safeway HAD to press charges, they could have done it on ONE of the parents, so that the other could stay with the child. That whole fiasco was ridiculous.

And I totally open my drink in the store and pay for an empty bottle at the register. ALL THE TIME.
