How do you celebrate your birthday? Were birthdays a big deal growing up?

I never really had birthday parties when I was a kid. It was just something we celebrated as a family. I haven't really celebrated my birthday in years, but birthdays are a big deal in DH's family. FIL just had his 60th birthday party and MIL rented a double decker bus and his friends and a bunch of our friends went bar hopping on it. Haha! They also do a birthday weekend where the weekend that falls closest to your birthday means that the family has to do whatever you want. My birthday is so close to Christmas that people are usually busy around that time. I've been pondering starting to celebrate my half-birthday instead in the summer.

My dd thinks she should have a half birthday party too..lol. We never had big parties growing up. And now Dh and I just go out to dinner or do something fun with the kids for our birthdays. I always have birthday parties for my kids, I love giving them their own special day. My dad once said to me, you don't have to have a party for her every year, I disagree. I love to celebrate the day the came into this world, it doesn't have to be a big grand party but I have to have some sort of party.

I always had birthday parties growing up, one with friends and another with family, now we usually go out for diner on my bday, because on your bday you pick the meal and DH only cooks hot dogs

for the boys we will always celebrate on their actual bday even if its just our family and have a family/friends get together to celebrate with them as well

I had a few parties growing up but mainly they were family only thing.

Birthdays are a big thing for me. Sadly it never gets celebrated. Although last year my cousin was here and she made me cupcakes..lol

For the kids the plan is since we probably won't do a lot of parties either. They will get the actual day to choose what we eat for breakfast/dinner/supper. They will have a special birthday plate as well.

I remember having a few parities growing up but that was it. We didn't grow up with a lot of money so my parents providing a nice dinner, cake and a gift was good enough for me.

Now, we do dinner, cake and gifts if they get me anything but I never ask.

Or if my birthday falls on easter like it did in 2008, then my husband hides my gifts like eggs and I have to hunt for them -.-

Ha! That's cute.

I only had a few parties growing up. My birthday was always a big deal to me...but not really anyone else. Last year i had the best birthday, spent the day with Sam and Kevin...went where i wanted, ate where i wanted and bought my own presents. Was great. I think from here on i just want to celebrate my birthday the same, out and about with Sam and Kevin. (and future kid/s)

Once Sam is old enough i'll let him decide (within reason) what he wants to do on/for his Birthday.

to me, birthdays are a big deal. it isn't about the money spent, it is about making the birthday person feel special and valued, celebrating that they are alive and we love them. I don't think a "party" is necessary every year, but the day will definitely be a special one. the birthday person gets to pick what and where we eat, we get a cake and a present and sing happy birthday and just make that person feel good.

Lori, that is what we do with the boys They pick their dinner, cake and we get them a bouquet of balloons. We've done this since Gage turned 1. I love it for them. They love picking out their birthday balloons and feeling special. It makes me feel happy to see them so happy.
