I think I know the answer to this but I'm just wondering...

For BTDT moms, how long did it take for your milk to come in with your past pregnancies?

Did you do anything to try and make it come in faster or is there anything you can do?

I think it was like 3 days after I gave birth. It's hard for me to know because I don't get engorged until after my milk comes in.

Mine was a little later, I think 5 days after DS was born. I was really worried about it.
I didn't do anything to try to make it come in faster, but I wasn't as educated as I am now.

I am popping in with an additional first time mommy question: How do you make milk come in faster?

Please share

Mine was about 3 days later... I had colostrum and DD lost about a pound until the milk really started flowing.

Being a first time mom then, I had no idea what I could do to really help the milk come in, but in reading about it now...

I've tried Monster Cookies throughout the nursing and it helped increase supply, and so I'll be baking and eating these starting 39 weeks.

I've also heard that pumping earlier (also helps spur labor, possibly) before baby is born can help bring milk in earlier.

Snuggling and smelling baby really works!!!

Maybe others have ideas, too...

I can't remember exactly but I think it was like 2-3 days.

I think the best thing you can do to help your milk come in is just to nurse the baby as much as possible.

I have a question for BTDT moms who have nursed more than one. Do you get as engorged the second time? It was so painful the first time and I'm really hoping that it won't be as bad this time around.

My milk came in about 3 days after. I have heard that pumping can help your milk come in faster, but I don't know if it is true.

I get engorged pretty badly every time. But I am small chested so I wonder if it has more to do with that.

Monster cookies recipe is in our REcipe share thread in the Greenhouse. There is probably a recipe also in the JM BF board...

They are full of yummy goodness, but I think the primary acting agent to get your milk supply are the oats. It's basically a TREMENDOUS oatmeal cookie, but the interaction of ingredients or the simple ingredients themselves really do help increase the supply.

YUMMY!!!

2-3 days for me.
I probably won't make the cookies. I'll just keep eating my morning oatmeal and have beer when I get home from the hospital. I didn't do either of those things with my other two and my supply was fine.
It's completely normal for babies to lose some weight before they're discharged from the hospital. Happened to the formula fed babies I know too.
I was less engorged with my second but she was an instant good nurser. My first had a rotten latch so he wasn't pulling out the milk. So I used a hospital pump to give him bottles while we were there. My milk came in really fast by using that thing. And my breasts were as big and hard as a stripper. Creeped me out. And the milk just shoots across the room when you're than engorged.
It's really better to not worry now about what to do to make it come in faster. The baby's natural sucking action is the perfect thing to bring in the perfect amount of milk at the right time. The vast majority of babies aren't hungry the first day or two anyway. They're just sucking instinctively. And if they're not hungry but get choked by your milk letdown they may freak out. That's what happened with my first. The nurses were on my case every minute trying to get ds to nurse. I was alone in the hospital, recovering from a c/s, doped up and just wanted them to leave me alone. Poor ds cried almost the entire time we were there, night and day. Nursing was much better when we got home.
But for what it's worth, if you really need the milk to come in then use an electric pump. Hurts a lot but works!

With #1, it was like an explosion overnight. I don't remember exactly when, but I know it was after I came home from the hospital-so it was at least the 4th night after having him. I was pumping because he was unable to BF

With #2 we BFed without problems and the only time I really felt engorged was if he went too long between nursing.

Funny story-when #2 was about 8 weeks old, hubby had to go to conference in Vegas. We'd never been, so we decided to make a cheap mommy/daddy getaway. The boys stayed with my mom and I pumped beforehand so he had BM the whole time. While in Vegas I pumped and dumped (I couldn't fathom trying to get that much milk home-I pumped about 40 oz a day for 7 days!). I'd pump right before we'd head out for dinner/the night. SInce it was hot out, I was drinking a lot of water-we went to see Leno and when we got back into the lights hubby took one look at me and said-uh-it looks like you're ready to call it a night.....my boobs were ready to explode! I really think drinking water helps A LOT!

The monster cookies are great too! Between the oatmeal and drinking ots of cold milk to go with the cookies, it was always a great supply boost for me....which I didn't really need, but it made me feel less guilty about downing the cookies.

I am the oddball here as my milk came in during labor. It was literally pouring out of me as I pushed. I was induced and the doctor said pitocin can have that effect. It never really slowed down though after the delivery.
I have to ditto the oatmeal and beer thing as I would always notice a surge in bm whenever I had either.
It's funny you ask this b/c I woke up this morning and was leaking. Maybe my milk is always in a hurry for some reason!

Thanks for the responses ladies!!! I learned some things I didn't know.

My milk came in on the 4th day with Ally.

I just recently heard about the beer thing. I don't really like beer and don't know that I will try this method but am curious about it... how often and how much is a nursing woman supposed to drink for this purpose?

my milk came on same day I started pumping. The supply gets massive apparently how often and long you do it - extremely if you have a baby next to as well.

Milk came in within 72 hours after each c-section.

The more you get baby on the boob helps bring the milk in. You already have colostrum so your baby is getting something! Almost all babies lose a little weight after birth. They poo, they pee, and everything else. All their systems are going on at once and they burn a lot of energy.

Mine came in about 3-4 days after I gave birth. I didn't do anything to make it come faster, but I couldn't breastfeed either so it didn't make a difference to me lol.
