Okay, so I am curious about slings... How in the heck do these things hold your baby? I look at them and I think there is no way that a baby can sit in a piece of fabric and not fall out. But then I see people use them and they seem to work. I have a front carrier for the baby but as of yet I do not have a sling. I am considering but again I can't help but think if I move an inch the wrong way out will come baby! Are they pretty much "idiot" proof?
Do they hurt your back/neck or is the weight pretty evenly distributed? Are there any "good" brands that you would suggest?
Am I the only one nervous about using one?

You can see in these how I make a pouch for baby to sit in, with the fabric spread over his bottom to his knees (you don't want their legs to dangle). Also notice how it is tight/smooth across his back, supporting him upright. (DS was about 5 months in these pics, but I started wearing him in this position when he was about 2 weeks old because DS preferred it, and it was more comfortable for me). When worn tight enough, they should not cause any discomfort, and as others have said, make carrying baby even more comfortable!
(Please ignore the funny face...I didn't know this pic was being taken)
If you are not comfortable with slings, I would highly recommend a wrap! (actually, I would recommend a wrap either way, as I like them both!)...They are SUPER comfy, and VERY secure!
Anyway, hope that helps! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.
I'm worried using a sling as well. I used a sling once, but it was home with an older baby b/c he needed a nap and it's the only way he'd nap with a new nanny. I was a bit nervous he'd fall out so I had a hand on it at all times. It was the Heart to Heart sling if you want to Google it.
I think a sling type carrier will go around your body in the same way a messenger bag does. Am I right more experienced slinging mamas? A wrap will wrap around your body and the baby sits in there nice and secure and close to you.
A great site that's worth checking out for safety concerns, sling and wrap recommendations and reviews is thebabywearer. You can also check out yahoo groups for a local baby wearing group. Even if you don't have a baby yet they would probably be happy to have you join them and try on some different wraps and slings to see what feels right for you.
The pictures I posted were of slings...They literally look like an arm sling. They go over one shoulder, holding the baby in the pouch/hammock created by the fabric.
A wrap is one LONG piece of fabric that wraps around and over your body several times creating an "X" for baby to sit in, and then has an additional pouch that pulls up over baby's back for further support. The Moby Wrap (Moby Wrap, Inc.) is a very popular company, used by many mamas I know. (I LOVE mine!) Snugly Wrap (Baby Carriers, Infant Carriers by Snugglewrap | Safer than a Baby Sling) is another great choice! Wraps look more complex to wear, but really, once you get the hang of it, it's very simple! and VERY supportive and comfortable!!
