This is a question I will probably ask my doctor at my next appointment, but do you think it is necessary to take a folic acid on top of taking a prenatal vitamin that already contains 800mg of folic acid? Is it possible to get too much? I am just curious what you ladies do or if anyone has any thoughts about that. TIA!

I don't know about the getting too much thing, never looked into that, but I do take extra as my vitamin does not have enough, I think it's only like 100mg or something pitiful like that.

I have a Vitamin B complex that I take - which includes Vitamins C AND folic acid...however I also take a separate Vitamin C and a separate folic acid as well...don't know if it's "too much" or not...but figure it couldn't hurt since the folic acid in my B complex is part of a pill with many other vitamins....

Hadn't even thought about it, to be honest. My prenatal has 800mg in it.

I don't since my multi has 1000mcg of folic acid in it. But i know you can't take too much since your body will just get rid of the excess (it's water soluble). I think I read a long while back that you should take between 600-800mcg of it.. so as long as you're in that range, you should be ok?

My B Complex also has 400 mcg of folic acid in it.

(And I'm hoping you ladies are talking in mcg and not mg...since that could possibly be overkill )

My doctor is recommending that I take 800mcg, and I read somewhere that you shouldn't take more than 1000mcg unless doctor recommended. I am currently taking a multi, which has 400, so I'm currently debating whether to supplement with an additional 400 of folic, or just switch to a prenatal that has 800. For me, the fewer pills i have to take, the better!
