IVF! So we had our most recent/latest doc appointment yesterday...and there's really nothing else he can do for us, as far as treatments go to try and bring the sperm counts up.

So he asked us our feelings on IVF and we told him "well, we've basically accepted that it's inevitable and am just happy that it IS an option!" (long story short for newbies...last month DH had to have a blood test for chromosome testing and had it come back positive for the issue they were looking at, we wouldn't have been able to do IVF and would have had to start looking at donor sperm and/or adoption....)

So right now - basically - is getting the financing (which we are working on)...the plan is to hopefully have the financing ready by August - which means I can start the BCP cycle (IVF is a two month cycle, 1st month being birth control pills) for my August cycle (I already have the prescription for the BCP pills!) and then harvesting/fertilizing/transfer in September!!!!!!!!!!

It is VERY bittersweet that we are finally at this step. I'm BEYOND thrilled and excited - but also still pissed, in general, that we even have to DO IVF when so many get pregnant for free. Yes I'm bitter - always will be. let me. lol.

I am also excited? happy? content?????...about the way we've decided TO finance the IVF...I did NOT want to take out a credit card to pay for it - and we have to pay ALL of it since my *usually wonderful* insurance won't pay a dime for ART (assisted reproductive technologies) for anything infertility related...

But we did shop around and the first RE we went to wanted $14,000 for the IVF...but I found another doc (which, btw, there's a lot here in Indy!) and he's got a great track record and I even met a woman and had lunch with her, who now has a 9 month old daughter thanks to this doc!!!
And so our IVF will only cost about $9,500 (maybe a little less, depending on the meds...as my doc said meds are between $1500 and $3,000 depending on the woman and how much she ends up needing...the IVF itself is only $4,000 + $3,000 for meds + $895 for ICSI + $1,500(give/take) for ultrasounds, etc...

So I have decided to take out the loan on my 401K. Thing is, I'm still paying off on the first loan we took out for our wedding! lol - so I have to pay off the rest of that (which we will do in July) and wait 30 days to take out the new loan for the IVF.

And honestly - I'm happy with the idea of paying MYSELF back instead of taking out a credit card to pay some creditor just in case the first time doesn't work (then we can also do FET, Frozen Embryo Transfer, next year as long as there's enough snowbabies left!)

But yes. I am excited. And I'm also terrified. lol.

It's like seriously? is this REALLY happening?!!!

yes. yes it is.

Yay! I too feel your bittersweetness, but at least once you get to IVF you know it's going to give you the best shot possible! I think this will mean great things for you and sounds like you found a great doc and have a fantastic financial plan that won't totally stress you out

Sorry I'm late to reply, just getting caught up after vacation!

I am so happy you are finally getting this shot. I know your feelings of bitterness, and trust me, I had many, MANY months of the same, which I think is the reason we kept putting off seeking MA. But once we got to the point where I realized I REALLY wasn't getting any younger, we took the leap. Our insurance didn't cover one cent of the IVF, which between all the testing, the first failed cycle that turned IUI, the full IVF cycle, all the medications for both...you don't even want to know how much we've paid out of pocket. LOTS. That's for sure.

(and on that note, we were told about $2500-$3k for meds, and each round ended up costing about $3600...just FYI. Nothing bad my doctor told us, rather, I ended up having to stim much longer than the average bear = required more meds. And FWIW, I'm still paying for meds now, as I need to be on them until at least 9w....so thats been about another $250/month so far. Couple of tips: 1) don't be afraid to ask for samples of meds at the doctor, 2) don't be afraid to ask them to shop around for where you are expected to get your meds...I am going through online pharm which is FAR cheaper than the local infertility pharm, and 3) look for coupons and/or ask your pharm rep for coupons! I've gotten several for my meds throughout, and even if it's just $40 here or $20 there, it all adds up!))

Anyhow, I'm so glad you are finally ready - emotionally, mentally, and financially, to take this next step! I'm excited to follow your journey, and always know that I am here if you have ANY questions or need to chat, since I just went through it!

xx

I'm so excited for you and your journey. We're probably going to need medical assistance as well--hopefully IUI will work for us, and it is frustrating that we have to pay to get pregnant. I hoping that you will get pregnant with twins from your first IVF!!!! Ok, if you don't want twins then just one beautiful baby!

Having twins would be scary but an amazing reward after everything you have gone through and still have to go through yet.
