Another project which has been keeping me busy this last couple of weeks is planning for my mums birthday, shes turning 50 on 15th March and we all thought we should do something special to celebrate as a surprise for her!

I have just this evening put some more concrete plans in place, me, mum and 5 other female relatives are going to go to a Spa for the day on saturday 16th, have treatments and have access to the faciltiies. can have lunch and generally wear robes all day

In the evening, the men of the family are cooking dinner for us all, one of my cousins is studying cooking at college and actually did christmas dinner for all of us plus a few others (c.15 people) so it should be yummy. I just need to come up with a menu. hmm

A friend of one of my aunts bakes cakes so she's arranged a cake for mum, a two layer topsy turvy cake in shocking pink and black. I've ordered a fancy sparkly number 50 and some pink/black feathers to make a cake topper (pre made cake toppers are really expensive - not sure if anyone has noticed ) and also a 50th birthday banner in silver and black from Amazon so we can decorate the dining room for the evening.

I'm quite looking forward to it, I just hope mums in a good mood on the day and approves of the plans. She can be a bit temperamental at times and we have kept it all a secret, she just knows were doing something for the day.

Anyway, I know its a bit random but just thought I would share!

sounds super nice! hope things go over smoothly and you have a nice day!!!!!

it would suck if she was in a bad mood. that happened with my bf's mother. they didn't do all this planning though, just came over to cook for her spend time with her and she wanted nothing to do with it. I didn't make it, which I'm kind of glad now that I didn't.

Throwing parties are always so much fun! And 50 is the big one!

What are your mum's favorite foods? I would serve those. Maybe do something fun, like appetizer versions of her favorite foods. Maybe have some kind of theme, if possible.

For instance, my brother in law (husband's brother) and sister in law share a love of baseball games. They are huge Philadelphia Phillies fans. So for their wedding, they got married at the Phillies' stadium and they served ballpark type food, i.e. Philly cheesesteaks, pretzels, hot dogs, etc...They also had real food too!

Thanks everyone, its been stressful but i'm hoping it all works out. The tricky thing with coming up with a menu is that my mum has a gastric band fitted so cant eat big meals or certain foods, so we have to work around that as well as trying to think of something she would particularly enjoy...she likes curries but i dont think its something that my cousin would be too great at making for lots of people.

I think it is really sweet you are throwing a party for your mom. I'm not close to my mother so I have never done anything like that.

You should definitely take pictures of the cake topper you make and post them on here.

Your plans sound wonderful! I'm sure that everyone will have a great time.

My mom can be a bit temperamental, too, especially about parties.
