Our living room and dining room is one long room...the previous owner had a table in the dining area...but dh and I don't really like that look and we don't have a big table (and don't need one)

The dining corner used to be a reading corner with bookcases and a comfy chair but now that we re-arranged the living room furniture to make it more open..I like the reading chair with the living room to make it feel more like a "room"
So now I am stuck with an empty rather large corner that I don't know what to do with

Any thoughts? We have our office upstairs, I dont know how I feel about a 2nd chair in the room...I was first thinking about putting an entry table there for keys and such but it still leaves the floor and area empty looking and plus we have a key holder in our laundry room that is right near the front door....

hmmmmm

Here are the pics (I also need artwork for the empty living room wall...I've had plans for this just still haven't gotten around to it)

Ok so I am not good at decorating... but I was thinking maybe an area rug and a decorative table in the middle with flowers on it?

Very cute house!

I think a rug would help a lot there, but it is a tough spot for what to put there if you dont want a table! What about a bookcase coming out by the stairway entrance with some plants on it? That would help kind of make the living room more of a "room" and add some interest there .. as for the area by the window...the only thing I can come up with is another nice big comfy chair.... or maybe a DIY bench with cushions & storage underneath?

just to clarify, is the third picture how it is now? With the fish tank, two small bookcases and one large book case by the kitchen entrance?

So is that open space in the third picture what you're trying to fill? Or the space in the first pic, between the chair and the tv wall or between the tv and the railing?

All 3 pictures are current (it's all one long room)..the First picture is the living room part..and Yes I completely forgot about the empty wall by the tv and railing...another dead space I've neglected haha

The 3rd picture is the area I'm talking about..with the bookcase by the kitchen..
I had a thought of my own "work station" for my doula business (when I finish certification)
But I'd have to make sure I keep it really clean and decluttered..which I'm not great at

and Thanks Kell! I like it It's old and still needs more work (like the hideous carpet on the stairs )..but it's home

you need a nice chaise opposite the black chair or in place of the chair and move the chair over towards the opposite wall..

I think i must be the odd one out here...I dont think it needs any more furniture! I think a large-ish rug on the floo where the bookcases are would look nice but other than that I think your fine.

And from experience, if your not sure about what you need. Dont buy anything! Give yourself some time to sit/live in the space first. You might find you get used to it!

Ditto Jen.

A nice, cozy area rug is all you need. Something to transition from kitchen into the living room. And some plants on stands!

PS, we should start a thread called "My favorite room in my house" or something, where everyone posts a picture of their favorite/best room <3

OK for the other space ..... no furniture needed..........I'd just do either a tall indoor plant like this next to the big tall book shelves
http://www.libraplants.nl/pics/IMG_0108_1.JPG
or a mutli tiered plant stand like this
Vintage Cottage Light Blue and White 3 Tier Wooden Plant Stand Doily Design | eBay
Not saying exactly but you get the idea right?
And if it was me I'd put those two small white book shelves together and do away with the shorter black one in the middle (maybe find somewhere else in the house for it) and put the fish tank on top of the 2 white ones.....if the height interferes with the photos on the wall if you center the tank, maybe off set it and put something else (picture frame or plant or pretty keep sake thingy) on the side that isn't as tall.... maybe a cactus dish garden...... I think as far as the floor space in that area I'd leave it as is once you get the plants in...or maybe a round area rug, not too big.........

ok well those are my ideas not insulted if you don't like them!
