Hi! I've been lurking here for awhile and thought I would pop in with a question. DH and I have been considering adoption for awhile and since we just found out that DH has sever MFI we are wanting to move forward with at least researching agencies, etc.

My concern is this: When I was filling out information they asked a lot of mental health questions. When I was in college (7 years ago) I was hospitalized (voluntarily) for about a week for anxiety issues. I have been off medication for 3 years now. Is this going to be a problem when applying for adoption? I never dreamed it would be, as it has been so long, but now I am getting nervous that we will never be able to have another child, even by adoption. We live in the U.S., by the way.

Thanks in Advance!

I think it will depend on: the agency, the extent of the issue, and how you are now. I'm kinda worried about the same thing. I've never been hospitalized but I have been on and off of anxiety/depression meds for almost 10 years.

Most of what I have read has stated it won't be much of an issue. More important is that you can document what happened and that you were being proactive about your health. With international adoption I hear that some countries are more strict about it (I think Russia was one).

Thanks That's what I was hoping, that it won't be much of problem if we explain that I was being responsible by taking care of myself, etc. Plus I've heard that about 1 in 3 Americans are on some sort of anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication at some point in their life....so that would disqualify alot of people from adopting.
