My hubby is applying for Postal Duty in the next week or so (deadline in May 3rd). He brought me home a list of openings today and after reviewing them all, Im stuck between 2. Maybe even a 3rd location.

If you had to choose between:
1.) 3 years in Bangkok, Thailand
or
2.) 2 years in Azores, Portugal

which would you choose?

Bangkok. I rate Thai food as being on the same level as manna from God.
And some friends of ours when I was growing up that were also in the AF had the first son when they were in the Azores, and they said something about having to go through some kind of hassle to get him out of having to serve a mandatory 2 years in their military when he turned 19. Apparently all males born there are supposed to serve, but my friends were American citizens so they were able to get out of it.

Thailand!!! For a million reasons. 1) The food, 2) the people there are just extraordinarily and unbelievably friendly (if you can manage to overlook the ubiquitous child prostitution), 3) it's cheap and you could save a lot of money, 4) it's close to every place I have ever wanted to travel (Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, the list goes on....) and you could go to all of these places during your vacation times. Portugal is just blah and boring in comparison. My husband lived in Thailand for six months, and I can call him in for reinforcements if you want some additional proof.

But seriously, I am so jealous! What a cool opportunity you are faced with!

Awesome! Thanks for the input! He has to apply and and I have no idea what the chances are that he will get it. Ive read where some ppl say they have gotten every postal assignment they put in for and others have said that they put in for it every time the opportunity comes up and never got it. If we DO get it by some chance, I plan to tell my family that it wasnt a choice, that we just got orders but honestly, one reason I wanted DH to join was so we could travel to places we otherwise (likely) wouldnt. I want to do what I can before the kids are old enough to really be affected by moving.

Now, I hear there is some political situation going on in Bangkok though. Just saw it on the news but havent really looked into it much. I'll have to find something online about it.

If you have children, Azores. There is very little crime in the Azores and it is beautiful. If you are actually going to be in Bangkok, there is high crime and high levels of sexuality. The culture is amazing in Bangkok but the city is a bit rough in places. I agree with Brui that Portugal is blah in comparison but with kids, that might be what you need.
