Unfortunately I didn't have my camera at the time, but I'm still browsing the internet for someone who did and has uploaded the picture.

I met Andy for lunch today, and on the drive home I was stopped in "traffic" for nearly 20 minutes by an alligator that was laying in the middle of the road, sunning itself. It was laying across one lane and then some, so both lanes were backed up.. and this was not some back road, but a major town road. He was just chilling in the middle of the road, oblivious to the at least half mile of cars waiting for him to move. The police showed up before animal control, and started directing people around the gator (which required driving over the median and into the opposing side of the road). I assume eventually they got it moved, but none of the police were going near it, for fairly obvious reasons.

Only in Florida, and only in spring, does one find gators basking in the middle of the road and chilling out in their swimming pools.

This is not the same gator or the same road, but just as a visual:

And this is not rare either:

Haha. We got them all the time in Interlachen because we lived on a lake. Not so much in Jacksonville, but we find snakes in the in-laws pool all the time. Foxes, rabbits, deer, and even scorpions.

Scary!

Also? My parents just bought a vacation home in Ormond Beach over the weekend. I'm psyched!

Sweet! It's only 1.5 hours from me! We gotta get together when you come down.
PS there are no alligators wandering around Disney...

I love driving down the road and realizing that your car better not break down there, cause the ditch is full of gators....

The good thing about gators is that they rarely attack full grown people. There either have to be a ton of them around, or they have to be REALLY big gators, or REALLY REALLY hungry.

So they only attack half grown people? As in children? Well that's reassuring!

haha.. but uh.. yeah kinda. And pets. But it's not Lake Placid around here or anything. If you run up to one with your kid or Labrador in tow, you're an idiot and yes, probably in danger. Or I suppose if you jump in the water and splash around and advertise your meatiness.

But I've been in water with gators, and had no issues. I won't take my dogs or children to play in those springs, though.

Gators have a natural aversion to people, unless they are being fed. DON'T FEED THE GATORS!

Keskes - Where in Florida are you?

Unfortunately, taking your Jack Russel Terrier swimming can count as feeding the gators. As for where I live.. let's just say that "Gators" are a part of my every day life, and it's a good thing I don't object to the color orange.

Haha. I'm further south than you, then, and on the other side of the state. Basically, I live in New York.

Long time no see!!! We used to post on Frugal Mommies together. How have you been??? I don't think I ever realized we were both from Florida either.
If you are south of Kes, than you are even farther away from me huh?

Hi, Melissa! Yes, definitely long time, no see. I've been MIA from JM for WAY too long, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.

I don't think I ever realized that you were in Florida, too, either. (Weird sentence. ) I'm about 5 hours south of Jacksonville, straight down I-95. We travel through your area several times per year, though, on our way back and forth from PA, NC, and SC. Basically, I try to escape the heat as often as I can!

That would actually work to my advantage considering I have less meat and more fat

Are you still couponing? I still am, I just never visit the board anymore. About the time you left I stopped posting.
Well, if you travel through this area multiple times a year that means we need to get our girls together and hit up the beach sometime!

Wow, that's nuts. I've heard stories about them being everywhere but that would flip me out.

Definitely, Melissa!

Yes, I still coupon and bargain shop like crazy. It's a total hobby for me and, thankfully, a useful one! But I haven't visited the Frugal Mommies board in a long, long time.

Next time we will be coming through Jacksonville will be in July with a return trip in August. Maybe we could plan something!
