Well my whole family is changing their diet, so I am changing some of the aspects of my own diet. First, Tony's blood pressure is dangerously high and he's at risk for a heart attack. So he had to revamp his entire diet (I think he is honestly pretty freaked out right now).

We went shopping today and I got tons of food that are a lot more healthy for me, including rice milk. First, I don't drink milk at all. I have never tried soy milk or rice milk. I saw there was such a thing as almond milk which I didn't even know about.

Well I tried the rice milk (vanilla flavored) and have to say I actually like it. The first sip was kind of odd, second was pretty okay, but it's grown on me. It's a whole lot healthier than the soda I drink every day!

Is there anyone here that likes soy, almond, or rice milk? What brands would you recommend? I have lots of questions... lol. I don't want any flavor recommendations besides vanilla... I'm not keen on chocolate or strawberry.

Does almond milk have that rich nutty taste? I can't stand almonds, it is far too nutty tasting for me, yet I love disaronno. If it has more of that taste, I'll try it. How is the unflavored milk drinks? Is the milk good in cereal? I saw on the side of the carton it's good in cereal, which is pretty kick butt. I love certain cereal but won't drink milk, so I pretty much just chomp on dry cereal. I think maybe having cereal the way it should be will be good

Any brands to avoid? Any brands to recommend? What do you all think? I'm probably going to pick up some more tomorrow and try to make a switch to drink that and not soda

I drink soy and rice milk. I'm not a huge fan of rice, but it'll do in a pinch when the grocery store's out of soy. Silk is a good soy choice - chocolate or vanilla for drinking, and plain for cooking and cereal. I usually get Wild Harvest though, which is an organic product line from Shaw's (our grocery store chain). It's cheaper than Silk and tastes exactly the same. Albertson's and Star Market may still do Wild Harvest stuff, if you have those around.
Chocolate soy milk + Godiva chocolate liqueur = pretty tasty. Tried it once. Probably not worth the price of the liqueur, but it's delicious.

I do rice and almond milk. The coconut milk that the poster above spoke of is fantastic---it's just not easy for me to get. My DS drinks nothing but almond milk and it's sweet and tasty. I don't find it nutty tasting at all. I'm a bigger fan of either almond made by Blue Diamond or store brand from Trader Joe's. They also make chocolate versions. I pour almond milk over cereal all the time and it tastes just like typical cow's milk IMO.

See that's what I don't want. I do NOT like the taste of cows milk, and the thickness of it just grosses me out. My parents used to have such wicked fights with me to get me to drink milk, but I have literally never liked it. I wasn't breastfed and had to have goats milk because of tummy issues, maybe that's where my aversion comes from. But if it tastes like cows milk... yuck. Don't want it

Another question... I was talking to a friend and she was mentioning sweetened rice milk and unsweetened... if it's sweetened would the carton say it? I saw some other brands saying sweetened or unsweetened, and some were still vanilla flavored but unsweetened. I have vanilla rice milk and while I can taste the vanilla, it doesn't seem that sweet. My friend was saying rice milk can be almost bad for you because of the sugar content and the empty calories it gives you. I was just wondering if I should switch to something else if this is indeed too sugary for it to have health benefits.
Here is what I have:

I can't stand the taste of milk myself but used to use it in my cereal. I really like almond milk. I use the vanilla almond milk in my cereal and I'll drink the chocolate almond milk on it's own and it's a great hot chocolate when mixed with real cocoa. I found rice milk a bit chalky and can't get past the taste of soy milk.

I like the Blue Diamond brand.

My girls LOVE milk and I joke I should buy a cow with how much milk I buy in a week. They'll even drink almond milk and it doesn't taste the same IMO. It comes sweetened and unsweetened.

A few years ago we made the lifestyle change and it was hard but it's becoming a way of life for us. It's amazing what you learn when you stop to read the labels. I was shocked to see sulphites listed as an ingrediant on Aunt Jemima's syrup!

We aren't too big of label watchers, but recently I have been pretty diligent about it. Do you know how many vegetable soups have chicken or beef stock bases? I can not remember the brand that I got, but I picked up a can of vegetarian vegetable soup. It had chicken stock in it! I was pretty much shocked. The cup of noodles brand cheese noodles has dehydrated chicken in it. I am pretty shocked at all these foods that have hidden meat sources.

Other than that, I'm trying to revamp my diet. I don't eat that unhealthy as it is, but I do have a lot of stuff high in sodium. But the best thing I've done for my diet lately is to drink a whole lot more water. I was never a water drinker, but now I crave it. These odd cravings are why I started drinking rice milk, because I have a literal craving for milk and dairy. I don't drink milk and don't like the taste, so no idea why I'm craving it. (No... Im not pregnant! lol)

I craze water too! Love it cold.

Labels are shocking. I'm not super fanatical with my food but I do live the theory of if I can pronounce it I'll eat it. I also try to eat with 100 miles of here and try to eat as much local meat/produce as possible. That alone eliminates most of the preservatives and processed foods.

Last year I was on an antiflamation diet put on by my naturopathic dr. I eliminated pork, wheat, dairy, tomatoes, corn, and a few other things. It was a long month but I got pretty creative. Fortunately the diet didn't change my issues and I added almost everything back but I know I should eliminate the wheat since it causes my horrible bloating.

I tried soy milk today, and omgosh I don't know why I knocked on soymilk before. It's great! I am almost wondering if I would like actual milk (it's seriously been 20 something years since I've had it) but the thought of drinking it makes me gag, so I don't think I'll be able to get past that.
